Brisbane after dark still orbits Fortitude Valley. Use The Valley when you want late rooms in one declared entertainment precinct. Use West End when you want courtyards and live pubs. Use the CBD for a hotel-bar first pour. There is no ranked cocktail list on this hub — first pours sit in the CBD and West End; the late-room density sits in the Valley — and every named door still needs verifying.
The archive organised nights around The Valley, Brisbane CBD, West End, and the compass suburbs. Fortitude Valley was the late-night gravity well because of a planning designation, not because this directory scored it. West End held live rooms and courtyard bars. The CBD mixed hotel bars with city pours. That split is still the honest way to plan.
How a Brisbane night actually splits
The river is the usual mistake. Groups eat in the CBD or New Farm, “have a look” at the Valley, then decide West End would be nicer, then recross for one more door. That is how you lose an hour on the Story Bridge or in a taxi queue. Commit to The Valley or West End after dinner. Crossing the river for “one more” is a new night.
The Valley is a declared entertainment precinct — a planning designation that concentrates late-night venues. It explains why the archive treated Brunswick Street and Ann Street as Brisbane’s late grid. It is not a star rating and not a guest-review score. Density is geography.
West End is not a Valley substitute. It is a neighbourhood night: courtyards, live pubs, a walking grid south of the river. The CBD is a first-pour grid for people already in hotel or office radius. None of those three is a Gold Coast strip and none is a Melbourne laneway city. Brisbane nights are river-and-precinct nights.
A compact night is dinner plus one precinct you can walk. A late precinct night is the Valley with a last room named before you leave the first door. Mixing Valley club floors with a West End courtyard “for a quiet one” after 1am is a transport decision dressed up as variety.
Precinct-by-precinct walking advice
Fortitude Valley
The Valley is the late precinct. Walk a short stretch of Brunswick Street or Ann Street with a last room in mind. Do not treat the strip as a theme park and bounce every door. First-timers who arrive without a precinct plan spend the night in queues they did not choose. Read Valley first-timers before you treat the entertainment precinct as a ride.
Family Nightclub is the Valley room the archive featured — multi-level mixed-genre character from the old copy, not a current lineup. The Met Nightclub is another archive late-room card on the Brisbane register. Treat both as historical character. Confirm whether the name and floor are trading the night you go.
The declared precinct is why late nightclubs cluster here rather than spreading evenly across the city. That is planning, not folklore. Door policy, ID, and cover still belong to each room. This directory will not invent a Saturday cover price. See the FAQ.
If you want a cocktail bar first pour inside the Valley, that can work — name it, then decide whether you stay for a floor. If you want a pub night, ask whether West End is the better precinct before you commit to Brunswick Street.
West End
The West End is the courtyard and live-pub alternative. Walk the neighbourhood you came for. Do not use it as a Valley overflow when the queues look long. The mood is different and the river crossing is real.
Max Watts Brisbane sits under West End as the archive filed it — live-room character, not tonight’s bill. Confirm the room. Other 2024 hub names (Transcontinental Hotel, The Glen Hotel, Lock n Load, H Lounge, Embassy Hotel, Elixir Rooftop, Bacchus) are not all reproduced. They still need a refresh pass. Their absence is a writing gap.
West End rewards a dinner-to-pub sequence you can walk. It punishes a late “one more precinct” add-on from the Valley. If the group is already on Brunswick Street at midnight, stay on that side of the river or go home.
Brisbane CBD
Brisbane CBD (use this city hub until a dedicated CBD page is verified) is hotel bars and a first pour. Start here if you are already in a city hotel and want one drink before you commit. Do not start here if you already know the night is a Valley club night — you will only add a crossing.
There is no ranked “best cocktail bars in Brisbane” list on this page. CBD and West End hold more of the first-pour rooms; the Valley holds more of the late floors. Open a profile for character, then verify. A hotel bar is a lounge or cocktail room, not a club. Say which one you want.
Compass suburbs
Brisbane North / East / South / West sat on the old map as compass buckets. They are a backlog. New Farm appears in first-timer advice as a dinner edge near the Valley — useful geography, not a seeded precinct hub on this rebuild. If a walking page is missing, we have not written it. Missing ≠ closed.
What this directory will not invent
No star ratings. No “number one Valley club.” No live cover. No current hours. No guest list. The entertainment-precinct designation is a planning fact; it is not a quality score. Family is not crowned. Max Watts is not tonight’s support bill. Skyline copy that still reads like a 2011 homepage card is archive language.
We will not invent a Brisbane lockout story to match Sydney. The citable NSW lockout package is 2014, wound back from 2020, and it is a Sydney CBD and Kings Cross history. Queensland nights still belong to each licence.
How to use /brisbane/all/{venue}/
Canonical venue paths are /brisbane/all/{venue}/, matching 2011. The index is all Brisbane venues. /brisbane-2/ 301s to /brisbane/. Precinct hubs such as /brisbane/the-valley/ stay as walking maps. Underscore slugs 301 to hyphenated profiles.
Open a precinct, then one venue for character, then the venue’s own channels for the door. /brisbane/all/family-nightclub/ is a profile, not a booking. /brisbane/all/max-watts-brisbane/ is a live-room card, not a ticket seller. This site will not put you on a guest list.
Missing ≠ closed
The Valley is the deepened precinct. West End is seeded. The CBD does not yet have a standalone walking page. Compass buckets and many 2024 names are not reproduced. A missing card is not a closure. A present card is not a trading certificate. Rooms in a declared entertainment precinct still rename and change floors. We keep historical URLs so inbound links do not 404.
If a name you remember from a 2011 strip is absent, it has not been researched yet — or it is waiting on a refresh pass. Do not treat the gap as proof the room is gone, and do not treat a seeded blurb as this Saturday’s hours.
How to use this hub
If you have never done Brisbane after 10pm: eat in the CBD or New Farm, then commit to The Valley or West End. Name the last room. Read the Valley first-timers note if the night is a club night. Confirm ID. Drink responsibly. 18+. This is not a booking engine.
