Brisbane nights in the old directory split three ways: The Valley for the late cluster, West End for live rooms and courtyards, CBD for hotel bars that turned into DJ rooms after dinner. If you are in town once, start with The Valley precinct. That is the deepened Brisbane hub on this rebuild — a declared entertainment precinct on the planning map, not a star rating.
First-timers fail here by treating Brunswick Street and Ann Street like a Gold Coast strip you bounce until a door says yes. The Valley is dense enough that a plan still matters. Pick a first pour, pick whether you actually want a club, and pick a last room you can walk to. Then verify the name. Operators change faster than the precinct label.
What “entertainment precinct” means (and does not)
Fortitude Valley’s special entertainment precinct is a planning designation. It concentrates late-night venues and explains why the archive treated The Valley as Brisbane’s late gravity well. It is not a quality ranking. It is not a promise that a named club from 2011 still trades. It is not permission to invent a cover price.
Use the Brisbane hub for the city-wide split, then the precinct page for the walking map. Canonical venue URLs are /brisbane/all/{venue}/. /brisbane-2/ 301s to the city hub. That is IA, the same rule as other capitals.
If you wanted the Coast instead — Surfers, Cavill, a visitor strip — that is a different city hub: Gold Coast. Do not mash them. A later article on this site compares those two Queensland nights as geography, not as a trophy.
Family, as the archive told it
Family Nightclub was sold as a multi-level, mixed-genre entertainment room with Friday and Saturday events, plus functions. Useful as a type (a proper nightclub, not a beer garden). Useless as a flyer.
Valley operators change names. A guest post that helps readers will say which block you mean, what the door was like on a dated night, and who it is for — not “Family is still the one.” We will not publish that sentence from the CMS unless an editor can stand behind a date.

West End is next door on the map, not the same night
Max Watts Brisbane lived under West End in the archive (with a former-Hifi note). Live rooms run on gig calendars. Do not send a first-timer there for a generic “club night” without a bill.
The West End precinct page is thinner on purpose. When someone writes a verified intro, it can grow. Until then the venue URL still works. West End is courtyards, live pubs, a neighbourhood you can walk. It is the night you want if you do not want a Valley door. It is the night you ruin if you treat it as a holding pattern before a club crawl across the river.
CBD hotel bars are a first pour, not a substitute precinct. Stay there if your hotel is there and the group is done at ten. Do not start in a lobby lounge and hope the Valley “happens” without a tram, a taxi, or a decision.
A first-timer order of operations
- Name the night. Club floor, live room, or pours-and-dinner. Only the first belongs in the Valley by default.
- Open the precinct page, then one venue profile for character — not five “best of” tabs.
- Confirm the name still trades, the hours, and whether a cover applies that night. We do not invent the dollar figure.
- Carry photo ID. 18+. If you look under 25 you will be asked. Digital licences are not universally accepted; ask the room if that is all you have.
- Eat before the door. Valley food exists; so does arriving hungry and irritable at a queue.
- Plan the way home before last drinks. The precinct is compact. The city is not, once trains thin out.
Saturday after a set hour is when covers and queues appear. That is a national club pattern, not a Brisbane price list. Midweek can be a different room under the same sign. We will not invent the weekly roster.
What not to copy from the 2014 magazine era
The old news homepage ran pickup-line columns and club-etiquette filler. That is not the guest-post brief now. If you want a byline here, pitch a city or precinct guide, a dated venue night, or a useful “how this strip works” piece. Editorial, not spammy backlink copy.
Do not write “the Valley is crazy right now.” Do not rank Family against The Met. Do not paste a flyer. Do not treat cocktail bars in the CBD as Valley content. Do not send readers to Cavill Avenue as if it were Ann Street.
How this sits next to other cities
The Valley is Brisbane’s answer to Northbridge and, in density if not in law, to the late side of Sydney after the lockout package was wound back. It is not Fitzroy — Fitzroy is pubs and bills. It is not The Rocks — courtyards and sandstone. It is not Salamanca — a visitor waterfront.
If you have one Brisbane Saturday and you already know you want a late room, start here. If you have one Brisbane Saturday and you want a courtyard, start in West End and stay there. If you have one Brisbane Saturday and you want both, you have already designed a taxi night.
