Soundwave, the (in my opinion) ultimate music festival to grace Australia this year, is about halfway through touring the country as we speak (well, as I write to be exact). I went to the Melbourne show at Flemington Racecourse, proudly wearing the Blink 182 t-shirt I brought from their sideshow three days earlier (no, it wasn’t the one with all the swear words on it), and first thing I had to do was wait in a huge line to get inside, which wasn’t too bad as my mates were catching the train there and they were going to be ages away anyway.
The first truly great thing about Soundwave was not having to get stupid tokens to buy alcohol (what a hassle getting tokens and then get grog was at Big Day Out!), though the lines to buy booze was chaos. After mostly drinking during the early hours and tripping over from a really bad case of pins and needles from sitting down for ages (I copped a lot of shit for that), the first act I saw was Stone Sour. I went to Linkin Park’s sidewave a few days earlier where Stone Sour supported, though they were wrapping their set up as I got there, but frankly I wasn’t overly impressed. After more drinking and sort of seeing Dragonforce do their thing (knowing only two of their songs from Guitar Hero), I left the group to hang out with the other group I was meeting up with (no, I wasn’t ditching the first group, these things happen at music festivals!).
Anyway, with the second group, that’s when the real action started. Got to see All Time Low (I had never heard anything by them before, but they weren’t bad), then the headliners finally started playing. It seemed everyone stormed towards the main stage to see Blink 182, which was friggin’ awesome! Linkin Park rocked it right after, and I tried to get back with the first group to see Metallica with them, but thanks to bad phone reception and being without a doubt the noisiest place in Melbourne that day, I couldn’t get a hold of them quick enough and they were too far into the mosh pit! Boo! No matter, I like The Offspring more anyway, so saw them with the second group; got to make the best of a (not so) bad situation (though I did have to go through friggin’ Paramore while waiting for Offspring).
All in all, it was a sick day. Though I would’ve liked to have seen Metallica and Slayer (and Garbage would’ve been nice too), I saw who I mainly wanted to see. I even bumped into an old friend who was working there that I hadn’t seen for years. My one true regret was letting myself get sunburned, thinking I’d tan; I certainly felt red faced about it (hehe…). Slip slop slap, people!
