The battle between music trends is one which isn’t new to bars and nightclubs, and whether it be a live band or doofing DJ who tickles your fancy- it seems everyone has an opinion when it comes to nightlife music. So if we settle the subjectivity and instead set a scoreboard, which form truly wins?
It’s time to place to rest the age old debate for once and for all.
Bands and DJ’s please take your place in the ring. Let’s get a’ ready to rumble!
Spontaneity:
There’s nothing better than running to the dancefloor after a certain change in music pace. Just when you’d thought you’d had enough, an entirely new beat entices you out of the smoke room and into the crowd. While DJs are restricted by the very discs that define them, live bands and musicians are able to chop and change musical notes with the spontaneity that only the human mind can deliver.

Trending tunes:
The ability for a DJ to pick up that track you’ve heard each day for the past week (but don’t yet know the name of) and pump it loud is a rare talent. In terms of new tracks, bands simply don’t have the time to learn a song released seven days ago in order to play it live on Saturday night.

Audience relationship:
Drunk dreamers like, no, love the ability to request their favourite song and dance around with sheer joy if it makes the cut. DJ’s have a much larger library of music, often sourcing from their very own laptop during each given set. This internet enabled capability means the DJ can please members of the audience no matter where their music request tastes may lie. Bands on the other hand are restricted by the songs and lyrics they have learnt, nothing more, nothing less.

Atmosphere:
There’s no denying, hearing the sound of raw, rusty voices belt out your favourite tune whilst adding their own twist is a feeling unlike any other. Whether it be their accent, their tempo, or just their god damn looks, certain bands make live music orgasmic- setting an atmosphere unachievable by the recorded music disc.

For now it seems the scores cannot be settled. Which do you prefer, live or recorded music? Have your say below and help define the debate!
