Live music and DJ nights in Australia: finding gigs and going safely

How to find and enjoy live music and DJ nights in Australian cities: where to look for gig listings, buying tickets safely and avoiding scams, all-ages and under-18 events, venue entry and bag rules, protecting your hearing, and getting home after a late show.

Published

To find live music and DJ nights in Australia, check venue and promoter websites, ticketing platforms, street press and community radio, then buy tickets from the official seller or an authorised resale platform. Check whether the event is 18+ or all-ages, the entry and bag rules, and the set times, protect your hearing with earplugs, and plan how you will get home after a late finish.

This guide explains each step. It is part of our Australian nightlife guide. We do not sell tickets.

Where to look for gigs

  • Venue websites and social media: the most up-to-date source for set times and changes.
  • Ticketing platforms: search by city and genre.
  • Street press and gig guides: many cities have free music magazines and online guides.
  • Community radio: stations often promote local gigs.
  • Promoters and artists: follow them for announcements and presales.

Music venues cluster in precincts. Our articles on Fitzroy, Fortitude Valley and Northbridge explain where to look.

Buying tickets safely

Ticket scams are common, especially for sold-out events. To reduce the risk:

  1. Buy from the official ticket seller linked from the venue or artist's website.
  2. Use authorised resale platforms if you missed out, and check the event's resale and transfer rules.
  3. Be wary of social media sellers, especially those asking for bank transfers or gift cards.
  4. Pay by a method with buyer protection, such as a credit card.
  5. Keep confirmation emails and know how tickets are delivered.

Report scams to the ACCC's Scamwatch.

18+ and all-ages events

Licensed venues must comply with state liquor laws about minors. Many gigs are 18+, and you will need valid ID. Some venues run all-ages or under-18 shows, often earlier in the evening and with no alcohol in the all-ages area. Check the listing before you buy; tickets are often non-refundable if you cannot get in. See ID and entry at Australian venues.

Entry, bags and venue rules

  • Arrive with time to spare for ID and bag checks.
  • Check bag size rules; some venues do not allow large bags.
  • Check re-entry rules; many venues do not allow it.
  • Follow security instructions.
  • Check set times so you do not miss the act you came for.

DJ and club nights

Club nights usually run late, with headline DJs often playing after midnight. Expect cover charges, dress codes and stricter door policies. See nightclubs, nightclub dress codes and cover charges and last drinks.

Protecting your hearing

Loud music can damage your hearing, and damage can be permanent. Health services such as Healthdirect explain the risks.

  • Wear earplugs. Musician-style earplugs reduce volume evenly so music still sounds clear.
  • Do not stand next to speakers.
  • Take breaks in quieter areas.
  • Notice ringing ears or muffled hearing after a gig as a warning sign.

Staying safe at gigs

  • Go with friends and agree on a meeting point in case you are separated.
  • Stay hydrated with water.
  • Pace your drinks; see pacing your drinks.
  • In crowds, move to the edge if you feel unsafe, and tell security if someone needs help.
  • Know the signs of drink spiking and what to do; see our nightlife safety guide.

Supporting local music

Small venues depend on ticket sales and bar takings. Buying tickets in advance, arriving for support acts, and buying merchandise directly from artists all help keep local scenes alive.

Getting home after a late show

Late finishes can mean limited public transport. Check last services before you go, book a taxi or rideshare, or travel in a group. Never drive after drinking.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find live music in an Australian city?

Check venue websites and social media, ticketing platforms, local street press and gig guides, and community radio. Precincts with clusters of music venues are good places to start.

How can I avoid ticket scams?

Buy from the official ticket seller or an authorised resale platform, be wary of social media sellers asking for bank transfers, and check whether the event allows ticket transfers. Report scams to Scamwatch.

Can under-18s go to gigs?

Only at events advertised as all-ages or under-18, or in venues and areas where minors are permitted under state liquor laws. Check the event listing before buying tickets.

Should I wear earplugs at gigs?

Yes. Loud music can damage hearing. Musician-style earplugs reduce volume while keeping the sound clear, and taking breaks away from speakers also helps.
