Cover charges are set by the venue, and they show up most often on Friday and Saturday after a set hour. Last drinks are also set by the venue’s licence and by staff on the night. There is no single national closing time in Australia, and this directory will not invent a live cover price, a dollar figure, or a clock that applies to every capital.

What a cover charge is
A cover is an entry fee for a room — usually a later floor with a door and a dancefloor. It is not a drink. It is not a tip. It is not a ranking of how good the night will be. A free door at 9pm and a charged door at 11:30pm can be the same room.
Patterns, not prices:
- Friday and Saturday after a set hour is when covers appear.
- Guest lists, if they exist, are an operator tool. They can reduce or waive a cover. They do not replace ID.
- Midweek can be free, cheaper, or closed. We will not invent the roster.
- Pubs and most cocktail bars do not charge a cover. A pub with a band might charge a ticket. That is a bill, not a club rope.
If a search result or an old magazine blurb still quotes a dollar amount, treat it as dated. Prices move. This rebuild will not republish a number we cannot stand behind tonight.
What last drinks are
Last drinks is the call that the licensed pour is ending. After that, you finish what you have and you leave. It is not a negotiation. It is not a national minute. Hotels, bars, and clubs set it locally under their licence conditions and, on the night, under staffing and RSA.
The 2014 NSW lockout package pulled last drinks forward in a mapped Sydney CBD and Kings Cross precinct. That package was wound back from 2020. Other states did not copy it wholesale. See Sydney after the lockout laws. Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, and Canberra still have last drinks. They just were not running that NSW clock.
If an archive venue card talks as if the city shuts on a timer, treat the copy as historical. Confirm the night you go.
How this changes the plan (not the ranking)
If the night is a club: assume a Saturday cover after a set hour and assume a queue. Carry ID. Dress for the door — dress codes. Arrive before the hour you were warned about on the venue’s own channels, or accept the charge. We will not name the hour for a city.
If the night is a pour: cocktail bars and wine bars usually cost you the drink, not the door. Kitchens still close. Last drinks still happen. Book if they take bookings.
If the night is a live room: you may pay a ticket that is not called a cover. Set times matter more than a rope. Confirm the bill.
If the night is a visitor courtyard: The Rocks and Salamanca can still call last drinks early by city-club standards. Seasonal hours in Hobart are a real planning fact; we will not invent the winter minute.
City geography, still without a price list
Sydney — harbour courtyards versus Cross/CBD floors. The lockout era trained people to decide before a cutoff. The cutoff is no longer that package. The habit of deciding is still useful.
Melbourne — one precinct you can walk. Laneway rooms and Fitzroy pubs fail when you assume “Melbourne stays up” as a municipal service.
Brisbane — The Valley is where first-timers meet a Saturday door. West End is a different night. Do not expect a Valley cover rule to apply to a courtyard.
Perth — Northbridge is the late cluster. Fremantle is a town Saturday. CBD rooftops close with weather.
Adelaide — one grid. Hindley-adjacent late rooms can behave like clubs. East End pours usually will not charge a door.
Gold Coast — visitor strip energy. Covers still belong to each Surfers or Cavill room, not to a coast-wide menu.
Canberra and Hobart — compact capitals. A handful of late rooms does not create a national price.
What we will not invent
We will not publish “covers are $15 after 11.” We will not publish “last drinks at 3am nationwide.” We will not scrape a Facebook event and reprint it as evergreen. We will not rank rooms by how cheap the door is. Cheap is not a quality score. Expensive is not a quality score.
If you operate a room, put the cover and the hours on your own channels. That is the canonical source. If you are writing a guest post for this site, dated observation is welcome (“on 12 July the door was charging, the room was this”). A live price list is not.
A practical order of operations
- Pick the type: club, pour, or bill.
- Pick the precinct on the city hub.
- Open one venue profile for character, then leave this site and confirm hours and entry on the operator’s page.
- Carry photo ID. 18+.
- Plan the way home before last drinks, not during the argument about one more.
Transport is how last drinks become a problem. Trains thin out. Rideshares surge. Ferries end. We will not invent the last service time for Circular Quay or Flinders Street. Check the night you go.
