One of the most frustrating things that can happen during a night out is the inability to get drunk. Everyone has had those nights where pre’s didn’t serve its purpose properly, or maybe you ate too much food to allow yourself to become properly intoxicated. Never fear though, there is a method in the madness.
1. Shots
This is a pretty full proof method. Recently I have discovered a great way to catch up if I fall behind drinking – have a drink, take a shot, have a drink, take a shot, etc. I know what you’re thinking, that you will without a doubt get sick from taking all these shots. And yeah maybe you will, but try and remember these key steps to insuring a vomit free night; give your body 15-20 minutes to metabolise the alcohol after each shot, no more than 5 shots within the hour, and obviously stick to the same spirits. Take care of your body and it will take care of you.
2. Dehydrate, You Know Like The Body Builders Do
Just kidding, please don’t. A somewhat safer way of ensuring you not only get drunk faster but also avoid looking bloated in that skin tight Kookai dress you’ve been looking forward to showing off is avoiding high fat foods. If you’re looking at the science behind it, it’s all about the rate at which alcohol is absorbed into your bloodstream. Consuming foods with low fat content will leave your body with less to digest in comparison to foods high in protein, leaving your double black to call dibs on absorption.
3. Be A Small Female With High Levels Of Body Fat That Is Stressed
Yes you read correctly… Being small in general greatly effects the body’s rate of absorption, and since females are stereotypically smaller than males, they are more likely to get drunk faster. Petite females therefore obviously have the greater advantage. Having high levels of body fat rather than muscle tissue can also help. While you may think this contradicts being “petite”, let us not forget the now common description “skinny fat”. Alcohol is not as easily drawn into body fat as it is into muscle tissue. Think of mixing oil with water, alcohol is intensified in people with more body fat. And to top it off, hormones produced when you are stressed helps alcohol to be metabolised faster. It can also cause the stomach to empty directly into the small intestine If you can channel your inner grade 10 biology student for just a moment, the small intestine is responsible for a few things, one of which is absorption. In entering the small intestine immediately, your raspberry cruiser bypasses mainstream digestion and enters straight into the bloodstream.
4. Stick To Carbonated Diet Mixers
As a die hard lover of full sugar soft drinks, it pains me to admit that diet is the way to go. Research has found that after using a diet mixer, blood alcohol readings show that drinks mixed with diet produced readings of up to 25% higher than those on regular soft drink. In addition to this, in the carbonated vs juice mixer war, carbonated comes out the winner. So throw that vodka sunrise away and get back to your vodka and Coke Zero. You might even lose a few calories along the way.
In giving such good advise I must add a quick disclaimer. Drink responsibly and take care of your friends. Happy partying.
