When we think of nightclubs, we think insanely fast doosh doosh music, pumping full blast to the point our ears bleed. The type of music where peeps breakdance and twerk and do all sorts of crazy moves that have to be seen to be believed. So it’s quite bizarre when you hear fast, remixed versions of slow, sad songs made to become hardcore party songs. I guess even the sense of tragedy that inspired those songs can produce their own sense of fun, albeit at the hands of an inventive DJ.
1. ‘Otherside’ by Red Hot Chili Peppers
For the younger clubbers reading this, who I guess would be no older than 20 or so, you may not remember that this song, as well as the album it came from, Californication. I guess I’m showing my age here, but back in 1999, it was a big friggin’ deal. Both the album and this ballad about letting drug addiction take you onto the dark side of life were major successes. Somehow, Third Party thought there was a clubbing classic in there, and it’s been playing on late night radio for years now.

2. ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ by Gotye
Aussies Gotye and Kimbra had a massive hit with this song; it was the song of 2011! Why Gotye didn’t follow it up with another hit single is a mystery, and frankly quite stupid of him, but I suppose he’s too busy counting the money he’s made from this hit to care. This song about being ignored by your ex and becoming a stranger to them was bound to get the clubbing treatment, and 4FRNT was the one to do it.

3. ‘Summertime Sadness’ by Lana Del Rey
While most remixes that usually play on late night radio never get more popular than the original versions, this is an exception. I’ve heard Cedric Gervais’s remix of Lana Del Rey’s ballad (overplayed, much?) so many times that I pretty much consider this to be the “real” version. The original seems so slow compared to this pumping remix!

4. ‘Young And Beautiful’ by Lana Del Rey
Miss Del Rey makes this list yet again! To be honest, it was the remixes of her two hits that took a life of their own, perhaps even dominating over the original versions, that inspired this article (hence the picture of Lana and her legs you wouldn’t mind getting lost in used in this article). But seriously, she’s hot and uber successful, yet she makes such bleak songs; her album’s called Born To Die for Christ’s sake! Cheer up, luv!

5. ‘Paradise’ by Coldplay
To be honest, this song never did anything for me; in fact, none of Coldplay’s more recent output has particularly interested me. Perhaps I’m still stuck in the early ’00s with their classics ‘Yellow’ and ‘Mr Scientist’ still being my favourite Coldplay songs, but in any case ‘Paradise’ was a massive hit for them in the charts, and Fedde le Grand’s remix made it a hit amongst clubbers too.

Dude- you totally forgot The Scissor Sister’s upbeat cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’, as well as Hook n’ Sling’s killer dance remix of Boom Crash Opera’s ‘The Best Thing’
