Mono = Monorail. Crawl = Pub Crawl.
It’s less than a month until the monorail in Sydney is removed. The useless mode of transport dreamt up by somebody who read too much sci-fi is on its way out so now’s the time to take advantage. Each stop may be walking distance apart, but when you’re drinking who wants to walk. Walking = sobering up.
The monocrawl is a pub crawl where, with a $9.80 day pass in toe, you hope from pub to pub at each mono rail stop.
There is no real dress code, but if you have an engineers hat, it should definitely be worn. Keep in mind any dress codes for the places you visit. You cannot legally drink on the monorail, “legally” being the operative word here.
Admire a great view of the city at night while in the company of friends. Loop round the city, getting off at each stop for a drink or three. Then get back on to the privacy and quiet of the high rise vehicle to discuss the recent shenanigans and those yet to come.
So, if you want to play the tourist, get around without minimal walking and maximum shelter, visit bars you might not usually and enjoy people continuously singing “Monorail, monorail, MONORAIL, mono-D’OH!” then get a crew together and organise a monocrawl before June 30th 2013.
Monorail stop bar suggestions
Galleries Victoria:
Meet up in Town Hall an head to a nearby bar. Grandma’s on Clarence Street is a small bar with a daily changing punch.
City Centre:
This stop offers access to Coolabar, known for its intimate service or Zeta Bar if you’re looking for a rooftop setting and extensive cocktail list.
Darling Park:
Darling Harbour has a lot of bars to offer. This would be a good place to end up. Remember, you have a day pass so you can go around as much as possible! Home Nightclub is my suggestion.
Harbourside:
You can’t go past Margaritaville. You could go to The Star for a gamble or Messina ice cream.
Convention Centre:
Here if you’re feeling active you could play a game of 10 pin bowling. If not perhaps the Hard Rock Cafe’s classic rock’n'roll feel will have you dancing.
World Square:
Try out the underground small bar Good God Small Club, which regularly hosts live music and has some pretty epic hot dogs.
