A few distinct differences come to mind when I compare city clubs and suburban clubs. Firstly, for a city club, I think of a room or two filled with sweaty young adults drenched in alcohol, listening to techno music and dancing the night away. For a suburban club I imagine, a small room filled with anyone aged 18 and above, drinking beer, playing pool and listening to a live band. Both of which are just as good as the other. It really depends on you as a person and your location. Here’s a few differences between the two and a few pointers in case you find yourself in a ‘fish out of water’ situation and need to know how to fit in with the locals.
1. A city club will have hyperactive young adults/teenagers on the gear with a drink in both hands grinding anything that moves. A suburban club will have anyone of any age (stereotyped, however, to men in their 40s), drinking whatever is on tap and most likely grinding the dog or pool stick (that again is a stereotype of country folk).
2. A city club will most likely be serving vodka, vodka, vodka with a shot of tequila. You might wait in line for half an hour to be served and pay a ridiculous amount for a shot. At a suburban club, you’ll be greeted with numerous beers on tap, most likely be able to put it on someones tab and if you’re lucky, a bowl of hot chips to boot. (This is, however, assuming you are attending a small suburban club where just the locals attend).
3. A city club may have boys dressed in suits (swoon), dressed in very smart casual attire, or wearing a fancy dress costume. A suburban club might see boys in a polo, jeans and joggers, or if you are lucky, Converse style closed in shoes. That’s not to say that both won’t be friendly and down-to-earth. The city boy, however, may just want to buy you a drink to get you into bed. A suburban boy might buy you a drink and actually listen to your story about your amazing job in the city.
4. The bartender in a city club might be so over you being the 100th customer that night wanting a ‘sex on the beach’, whereas a suburban bar tender will most likely know your drink and name by the end of the night.
I’ve been fortunate enough to experience a city and suburban club and neither are better than each other. It depends on the night you are looking for and the company you keep. So if you find yourself at a foreign venue unsure of how to do the ‘nut-bush’ just remember: when in Rome…
