Melbourne CBD was the first item on the archive’s “Where are you going?” list. It mixed function-friendly cocktail bars, backpacker rooms beside Flinders Street, and smaller listening venues. The grid inside the Hoddle is dense after dark — which is why groups get lost in a laneway plan that never names a last room.
This page is the walking map for that grid. Melbourne’s city hub is the parent. Fitzroy is the north-side walking neighbourhood. St Kilda is the beach-end live precinct. Melbourne North is the archive’s leftover north bucket, not a high street.
How this night differs from the siblings
A CBD Saturday has more doors than one night can use. That is the point and the trap. Fitzroy solves the trap by being one cluster: Brunswick Street, side-street pubs, a bill attached to a room. St Kilda solves a different problem — a band night at the beach end, not a laneway crawl. Melbourne North exists so a compass-point URL from the old site has a place to live; it is not “the rest of the north” as a walking tour.

If you are staying inside the Hoddle, stay inside the Hoddle unless the group already agreed to go north or to the beach. Crossing the river or riding the 96 after midnight is a new night.
Walking the grid
Flinders Street Station is the southern pin; Southern Cross and Flagstaff cover the west; Parliament and the eastern hotels cover the other end. The laneways — the ones people mean when they say “Melbourne laneways” — sit between those pins. You do not need every lane. You need one first pour (often a hotel bar or a cocktail room) and one last room you can walk to without recrossing the Yarra.
A laneway is geography, not a score. A room entered from a narrow lane can be a cocktail bar, a late listening room, or a door that has changed name since 2011. Confirm the name on the building and on the venue’s own channels.
Station-adjacent backpacker bars sat on the old CBD list because visitors stay near Flinders Street. They are a first-pour option, not a substitute for a north-side pub night. If the group wants pubs and a bill in one neighbourhood, leave the grid and go to Fitzroy as the plan, not as an encore.

A group that tries to “do laneways” from Flinders to Flagstaff without a last room is using the grid as a maze. Name the first pour and the last room before you leave the hotel — a hotel bar, a cocktail room such as the seeded Redlove card, or a listening room such as Paris Cat. Those cards are historical character. Confirm whether the name still trades and whether the bill (if any) is on.
A laneway is an address pattern, not a quality score. Some lanes hold rooms that changed name twice since 2011. Some hold doors that were never in the directory. Missing ≠ closed. Docklands names from the old map are a backlog, not a western encore you add from Southern Cross.
Backpacker bars beside Flinders Street sat on the archive list because visitors stay there. They are a legitimate first pour. They are not a substitute for Fitzroy and they are not a reason to skip verifying a late room. If the group wants pubs and a bill in one neighbourhood, leave the Hoddle as the plan — tram north — and stay north.
Victoria did not copy NSW lockout laws. That does not mean every CBD room pours until dawn. Individual licences differ. This page will not invent a last-drinks time to make the grid look more like a lockout story or less like one.
