The 2011 barsandnightclubs.com.au IA put every Melbourne room under /melbourne/all/{venue}. Search listings lived at /search/melbourne/all/. This page keeps that city-wide bucket as a live index — the cards this rebuild has written, including historical archive copy.
It is a register, not a laneway map. Melbourne is a walking city only if you pick one precinct. If you need geography, open the Melbourne CBD, Fitzroy, St Kilda, or the compass bucket Melbourne North. The parent editorial is the Melbourne city hub.
How /melbourne/all/{venue}/ works
Hyphenated /melbourne/all/{venue}/ is canonical. Underscores from the old CMS 301 here. Later precinct-nested paths — the ones that looked like /melbourne/fitzroy/{venue}/ — also resolve to this index pattern. The precinct hubs themselves stay live as walking maps. They are not the parent URL anymore.
This index is the honest list of rooms we have written. It is not a claim every 2011 name still trades. It is not a scored ranking. It is not a substitute for the venue’s own hours.
Precincts are walking maps — this is the filing cabinet
Melbourne’s after-dark map is dense, which is why the old directory needed precincts. The CBD is the Hoddle Grid: laneway cocktail rooms, hotel bars, backpacker rooms beside Flinders Street, smaller listening venues. The risk is treating “laneways” as a crawl with no last room. Fitzroy is the north-side walking neighbourhood — Brunswick Street, side-street pubs, rooms with a bill — the easy answer to “where are we actually going?” St Kilda is the beach end: live institutions and pubs around Fitzroy and Acland Streets, a band night rather than a laneway night. Melbourne North is the archive’s leftover north drawer, not a high street; use Fitzroy when you want to walk.
Docklands and other old-map names are not all seeded. Missing ≠ closed.
If you open every card on this index and try to visit the CBD, Fitzroy, and St Kilda in one Saturday, you will spend the night in a tram argument. Pick a precinct on the city hub, then come back here for one or two profiles.
Missing ≠ closed
A laneway you remember from 2011 may not appear. A Fitzroy pub may be unmarked. A St Kilda live room may still be in the backlog. Those gaps are research, not closure notices.
A card that does appear may carry archive language and a refresh banner. That means the copy was seeded, not that the door is open tonight. Confirm trading, the bill, and last drinks on the venue’s own channels.
Victoria did not copy the 2014 NSW lockout package. Late licences still belong to individual rooms. This index will not invent a city-wide closing time to make the list look current.
How to use this index
- Pick a precinct you can walk — CBD, Fitzroy, or St Kilda in the usual case.
- Open that walking map.
- Use this page only to find a written profile.
- Treat the profile as historical character until you have verified the door.
- Drink responsibly. 18+. This site will not book a table.
No star ratings. Hours belong to the venue. The 2011 path stays live so inbound links and old search listings have an honest home — a city-wide list of rooms we have written, not a fake live crawl of every historic URL.
How to read a Melbourne card next to the right map
A Fitzroy card belongs beside the Fitzroy walking map — pubs, DJs, a bill in one neighbourhood. A CBD card belongs beside the Hoddle Grid map — laneways as geography, not as a score. A St Kilda card belongs beside the beach-end map — a band night, not a laneway encore. A north-compass card such as Strangelove’s belongs beside Melbourne North, which will send you back to Fitzroy if you wanted a walk.
If you open three cards from three precincts and try to visit them in one Saturday, you have ignored the city hub. Melbourne is a walking city if you pick one precinct. The 96 to St Kilda and a tram to Brunswick Street are not a loop.
/search/melbourne/all/ and underscore slugs still exist so old inbound links resolve. They are not a fuller secret index. Missing ≠ closed: Docklands, Collingwood, and unverified laneways are backlog. Present ≠ open: a refresh banner means the copy was seeded.
Victoria did not copy the 2014 NSW lockout package. That sentence is here so Sydney lockout language is not pasted onto a Melbourne card. Late licences still belong to individual rooms. This register will not invent a city-wide closing time.
The Fitzroy walking guide is the planning essay. This page is the cabinet. Use them in that order: hub, map, article if you want the pattern, then one profile, then the door. 18+. Drink responsibly.
If you only need a type, not a suburb, leave this index and open cocktail bars or nightclubs. Come back here when you have a Melbourne name to look up. The register will not invent a live cover or a city-wide last-drinks hour to make the list look current.
