What to Expect @ The Lion Hotel

By Verity Trott

The rich, dark wood interior welcomes one into the cosy and friendly atmosphere of The Lion Hotel. Lighthearted chatter is easily heard above the soft hum of mainstream pop and rock tracks. A separated and slightly raised dance floor offers many giggles and a release from the working day. A live 80s/90s cover band takes the stage later in the night belting out some old school favourites that demand a groove and a sing-a-long to an old Westlife tune.

Cool and innovative bartenders circulate the centralized bar, keeping the drinks and cocktails flowing all night long. Free entry enables one to buy an extra averaged-priced brew and appreciate the sports entertainment offered on the various plasmas screens located around the bar. Casual clothes are worn by people of all ages, reinforcing the comfortable and family friendly atmosphere successfully upheld by The Lion Hotel.

Through a set of double doors there is a quieter bar accompanied with low hanging lamps and cushioned seats for a more private evening. Here conversation is the highpoint as the music is soft and hardly noticeable. A rum and coke warms one’s insides complimenting the outer warmth and glow of the friendly, relaxed, atmosphere.

Signposts that direct one to Liverpool, old ornaments, oil paintings and portraits, moose heads and a sprinkling of flags strung across the walls allow The Lion Hotel to preserve that traditional English pub flavour. Residing on level three, with its privileged location in Melbourne Central, The Lion Hotel is a popular and iconic meeting place for locals and tourists. Open day and night, this cosy pub offers a slice of traditional British pub life while sheltered from the ebb and flow of the city’s center.

A Second Review of The Lion Hotel

Review by Rick Restaino

Deep within the belly of the beast that is Melbourne Central Shopping Centre is one of Melbourne’s best hidden secrets—the Lions Pub. Located on the third floor, on the corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale Street in Melbourne’s CBD, the Lions Pub offers patrons the chance to experience a true English pub experience, without having to travel the 17,000 kilometres.

In the heart of its main area is a bar which spreads out very conveniently and often has numerous bartenders which won’t leave you too thirsty. Around it are booths, a billiards table and a vintage deer hunting arcade game to keep you busy, if you’re planning on having a long night.

The venue is draped in varnished wood and often you’ll find vintage styled barrels, which look to be taken from the set for the last Pirates of the Caribbean film, to place your pint or cocktail on. On top of the bar are high-definition televisions—often screening the best of the English Premier League, or UFC, for any diehard fan’s viewing pleasure.

There is a second room at the back with another bar for those looking to escape from the craziness during peak time, or for the others looking to relax and dine out with a tasty meal with friends.

The dance floor does the best it can do for its size. For those experienced clubbers looking for spacious area to show off their dance moves will be disappointed. Most nights are shared by a DJ and band that will amaze you with their great renditions of rock favourites and the best of modern house, respectively.

Despite being indoors, Lions Pub has a beer garden out-front for those looking for a breath of fresh air.Lions Pub is definitely a place that has something for everybody and is not to be passed up if you’re looking for somewhere with a variety.
