I’m not sure if you’re really entitled to go to an “afterparty” if you didn’t go to the actual party in the first place but hell, I decided to go to a Future Music Afterparty anyway this year and skip the main event. Did I miss out on a super fun day of music and dancing? Maybe. But the princess in me just wasn’t up for sweating it out on a dusty racecourse – it’s hot in Sydney this week!
Instead, I traded the dust and sun for sticky floors and air con. What can I say, it was cheaper and trance royalty, Cosmic Gate (aka Nic Chagall and Stefan ‘Bossi’ Bossems from Germany), were playing at the Metro Theatre after the festival. I hadn’t seen these guys live before, but my friends had been raving about them since their last visit to Sydney over a year ago so I knew the show would be worth checking out. Plus, audio generally sounds better at indoor venues, so if you’re a diehard fan of an act, side shows are a must.
Supported by Tab and Super 8, Cosmic Gate didn’t disappoint the crowd; putting on a pretty freaking amazing light show, and keeping everyone dancing till the wee hours. The venue was kind of perfect too; the place was packed, but no one was being trampled and the bar line moved fast.
My favourite part of the event though? The trance crowd. A little crazy, yes they are. And most likely on a few happy pills, but boy are they friendly. I miss the days of clubbing in Sydney when people did their own thing in their own space and clubs weren’t so over capacity that you get pushed around left, right and centre by aggressive Jersey Shore wannabes just trying to set foot on the dance floor, and end up leaving with drinks spilt all over your new (suede!) shoes. Yep, I had a long moment of nostalgia hanging out with my happy prancing trancers; it was smiles and free hugs all around, and they are all about the music and dancing, which made for a pretty fun night.
Now, what to do next weekend…
