What to Expect @ Casey’s Nightclub

By Morgen Newton

Cheers Tuesdays at Casey’s Nightclub has been parading itself around as “Melbourne’s biggest Tuesday” for some 15 years. Needless to say, I expected to walk in to a club that would live up to its reputation of being ‘big’. I suppose in that respect, it did not disappoint; it was indeed big. Excessively big. Disgustingly big. Get the picture? Good.

From the two-hour long wait to get in, to the over crowded doorways; not to mention the long bar lines, the boomingly loud music consisting wholly of poorly done remixes and awkward repeats of songs heard several minutes earlier – and the over use of ‘special effect’ lighting such as lasers and strobe lights (which is surely only a delight to those with large pupils and a penchant for glow in the dark accessories), I was overwhelmingly turned off of Cheers before my evening even had a chance to begin.

Please do not get me wrong, my complete dislike of Cheers does not necessarily mean that it should be blacklisted (although I think I have made it pretty darn clear that I shall not be returning any time soon). In fact, the sheer number of energetic university-aged punters who return week after week to party their arses off shows that Cheers certainly has something going for it, even if I am still trying to figure out exactly what that is.

With $10 entry and drink specials such as $3.50 pots, $6.50 basic spirits and $5 Champagne, Cheers is a relatively cheap place to drink excessive amounts of alcohol, act like trash bags and dance around to terrible remixes until the early hours of the morning. I guess that’s exactly what it’s all about. The patrons don’t seem to mind that the decor is the same as it was 15 years ago, that the chairs and carpet are ripped to shreds or that the whole place – despite having four rooms – is far too crowded. They are simply there for a good time. In that respect, I can only say kudos to Cheers for staying strong for 15 years… even if it’s not my cup of tea.
