This cocktail bar has won too many awards to list them all. Words simply can’t express the brilliance of this place. Providing an escape from the world of artificial, pre-mixed tasting drinks. Inspired by the time tested classics from the dawn of refining drinks, Der Raum refuse to use cordials or juices, instead hand pressing juices daily as is to be expected from a cocktail lounge inspired by the bygone era. As one can expect, this attention to detail and adherence to the classics takes a little extra time, and costs a little extra but for the cocktail enthusiasts, this is well worth it. Der Raum offers more then a cocktail… it offers pure drinking endulgence.

Der Raum Review

Review By Naomi Snell

It’s stylish, it’s swuave and unless you’re a member you will need to have made a reservation and to be buzzed in. Welcome to Der Raum! Awarded 2010 Cocktail Bar of the year by the Australian Bartender Magazine and located at 438 Church St Richmond, this swanky little bar is a must for cocktail enthusiasts. The bar will turn ten this year and the feat has been celebrated by renovations including the installation of booth seating for added comfort of patrons and members. The booths are quite private and secluded allowing for private business meetings or romantic rendezvous.

The artwork adorning the walls in Der Raum are by owner, creative director and house artist, Matthew Bax, who currently resides in Munich. This bar may be exclusive (annual membership attracts a price of $250) but nothing about the cosy, quaint little setting is pretentious. In fact, the only dress code provided is that you must be wearing shoes to enter! If you’re lucky you may be permitted entry sans reservation however, capacity (anywhere between twenty and fifty people) is dictated by bar staff wishing to provide an optimum cocktail experience.

Cocktails here range from twenty to twenty five dollars and all feature house ingredients or twists. House favourites include the Martini, Pharmacy or the Ben Shewry. The latter is a tribute to a local head chief from Attica restaurant in Ripponlea. Ben Shewry won Chef of the Year in The Age Good Food Guide (2011) and Attica was ranked 53rd in the world in San Pellegrino World’s Best Restaurants.

Der Raum is opened 7 days per week for 5pm until 1am. During the week the music is an eclectic range of moody drinking music, with a DJ spinning tracks on Friday and Saturday evenings. Fridays tend to feature sole and rhythm and blues, whilst Saturday’s music offerings prefer a Latin vibe. The crowd is mainly blue collar however, outsiders are embraced. I encourage others to visit Der Raum for a whole new experience. This could be for example, like having a Senator offer to put you and a friend on his parliamentary visa card?! Ah, what I meant to say is, what happens at Der Raum, stays at Der Raum.
