Cabinet Bar & Balcony Review

Review By Cassie McKay

It’s Friday, work is over & university classes finished up. All I want is a vodka lemon lime and time to relax with friends before Monday rolls back in.

By sheer mistake I stumbled onto Cabinet Bar & Balcony with some friends after a 4 hour lecture. Located in Rainbow Alley just off Little Collins is where you will find this little pot of gold (mind the pun). Neighbouring the Town Hall is the chic Victorian style bar, with a hard to miss sign: CABINET.

Once inside, the antique inspired scenery is enough to make you want to sit down and reach for the cocktail menu. Calming turquoise colors and patterned chic paper cover the walls; a dark wooden bar is placed to the right of the room with matching seats & tables. There’s even a stylish couch with magazines so people can relax with a drink & some good reading material.

With the interior all decked out, the exterior must be damn good… And let me tell you it is! Once I was seated outside I got a great view of Swanstown Street, also known as Melbourne’s lively city street. The tall greenery of trees dangling over the balcony really gives adds a more natural feel as opposed to the architectural cement design of the city.

At Cabinet Bar & Balcony you’ll pretty much find all ages, from university students (such as myself) to businessmen having lunch meetings. On the weekends people aged 18 to late 50s can be found there. With lunch, dinner and weekend drinks anybody can enjoy Cabinet Bar & Balcony! Which leads me to prices… I have to admit I judged the place when I first walked in but the menu is very affordable. The menu price of entrees range from $9.50-$13.50, mains from $16-$16.50 and desserts from $8.50-$16.50, and the food is delicious! Not a broad range to choice from but enough to go for a nice lunch or dinner. Word to the wise though if you have a sweet tooth: order the chocolate fondue with croissant, fruit & marshmallow… Yum yum yum.

When it comes to drinks, Cabinet Bar & Balcony is a great place to go. Their list of wines and cocktails is quite impressive and their range of beers on tap also great for the beer lovers out there. Mondays they have $10 martinis all day long and Tuesday’s happy hour with beers at $3 & wines at $5!

Open different hours from Monday to Sunday, there is always a day of the week you can find yourself at Cabinet Bar & Balcony. If you prefer to make a booking, just go on their website to book online which I found was quite an easy way for people.

I would personally go back to Cabinet Bar & Balcony. It’s a great place to eat and drink as well enjoying a catch up with friends. The available smoking area is great when trying to hunt down a place for all your friends (even the nicotine loving ones!). The ambience inside is chic yet casual, with no suit or heels needed which is great. The outside balcony a relaxing getaway from work, school or the many stresses of life. I will definitely be making make my back down Rainbow Alley.
