Adelaide nights fail when visitors treat the city like Sydney — four precincts, one Saturday. It is one grid. Hindley-adjacent late rooms, East End cocktail and wine pours, Peel Street, and Gouger sit inside a compact CBD you can walk if you pick a last room and stop treating the map as a second town.
Start at the Adelaide hub, then open Adelaide CBD or Adelaide East. Those precinct pages are walking maps, not ranked lists. The 2011 directory filed most rooms at /adelaide/all/{venue}/. Hyphenated paths are canonical. Underscore slugs and later nested aliases 301. That is URL fidelity, not a claim every archived name still trades.
One city, two honest moods
The useful split is mood, not distance.
CBD / Hindley-adjacent is where the archive concentrated later rooms, hotel bars, and the casino-complex gravity. If you already know you want a door and a floor, this is the side of the grid to stand on. It is still not a Fortitude Valley-scale entertainment precinct. Density is relative. Adelaide’s late cluster is walkable because the city is small, not because we invented a strip ranking.
East End held cocktail and wine character on the old site — shorter pours, a dressier first drink, rooms you sit in. MyBar lived in that story. So did the national cocktail card for Distill and the wine-bar seed for Apothecary 1878. Useful as types. Useless as a live reservation sheet.
You can walk between those moods. That is the point. You should not plan a Hindley club, an East End tasting flight, and a Gouger dinner as if they were three suburbs with three taxis. Pick a first pour and a last room. Leave slack for the walk.
How the archive actually filed Adelaide
The September 2011 site used /adelaide/all/{underscore} for venues. This rebuild uses hyphenated /adelaide/all/{venue}/. Precinct hubs stay as geography. /adelaide/adelaide_cbd/ and similar aliases 301 toward the hyphenated CBD path.
Many Hindley-era club names in the archive are closed, renamed, or operating under a different licence. We keep the URLs so Google and old links do not 404. That is the same rule as Perth’s AccessVIP slug and Sydney’s historical club cards. A live URL is not a live room. If a profile still talks like 2011, treat the copy as character and confirm the door on the operator’s own channels.
Named rooms you may open for character — not as a “best of Adelaide” list — include Distill, Apothecary, MyBar, and other /adelaide/all/ seeds. If a name is missing from the hub, that is a seeding gap, not a closure notice. If a name is present, that is not a star rating.
A Saturday that fits the grid
- Decide the first hour. Hotel bar, wine room, or a dinner street you can walk from. East End and the eastern edge of the CBD suit a first pour. See cocktail bars if the night is a date or a conversation.
- Decide whether you want a club at all. If you do not, stay on pours and pubs. Nightclubs as a type mean a later door and often a cover. Adelaide can do that type. It does not require it.
- Pick one last room on the same grid. Do not add a second “precinct” that is actually two blocks away and call it a crawl.
- Verify the name, the hours, and ID. Photo ID is routinely asked if you look under 25. This directory is 18+. See FAQ.
- Plan the way home before last drinks. Compact cities still run out of rideshares at the same time everyone else does.
Winter and festival weeks change the feel of the same streets. We will not invent a calendar. Fringe, university calendars, and AFL travel weekends make doors busier. That is a pattern you already know if you live here. Visitors should assume Saturday after 11pm is not a quiet wine-bar night on Hindley, and should not assume the East End is empty because it is not a club strip.
What this guide will not do
We will not publish a star table. We will not invent a cover price. We will not say Church, HQ, or any other archived club is open because the URL still resolves. We will not collapse Adelaide into “the best bars in South Australia” for search. The city hub already answers “where do people go out” as geography: one walking CBD, Hindley-adjacent late rooms, East End cocktail and wine rooms.
If you are comparing capitals, Adelaide is closer to Hobart in scale than to Sydney or Melbourne. It is closer to Perth in having a late cluster next to a small CBD, except Perth’s cluster has a railway in the way and a port town as a genuine second night. Adelaide’s “second night” is usually the same grid with a different first pour.
