Sugar is a club venue for a discerning niche market looking for a late night up-market alternative to the West End, featuring a friendly and creatively comfortable environment to relax and celebrate with friends without fear or worry; with great music from local, national and international disc jockey’s and original art by local artists. A place where East Enders can dance the night away after eating in any one of the restaurants in the street, after the cinema or just wanting to kick on after the pub shuts, without having to leave the area.

Review of Sugar Nightclub

Review By Shannon Kilgariff

As you strut down the street ready for a night out you will most probably come across a single door with two bouncers standing alongside it. This inconspicuous club really brings something wonderful to Adelaide’s Rundle Street. Although Sugar doesn’t look like much from the outside, you have to go through this door for the party to begin.

Situated near Fumo Blu and next to the Italian bistro Scoozi, Sugar is quite easily overlooked which is a shame because it provides so much fun! As you enter the single door and up the stairs you can hear the music pumping. The first thing that will capsulate you at Sugar is the mirrors. These mirrors create an amazing illusion throughout the bar. The huge mirror behind the dance floor and many on the walls will mislead you to think that there is an upstairs area.

With chandeliers and other exotic lighting scattered throughout, Sugar has a fantastic vibe about it. The red coloured gloom that arises from the hang down lights creates a great effect and makes the bar look rather sophisticated. If you love artwork that is slightly alternative, Sugar is the place for you. Strange, abstract and interesting artworks for sale line the walls at every possible space keeping your eyes busy all night. There is also great seating at Sugar with leather couches in a booth like setting. If you enjoy playing pool then you will have a ball at Sugar. There are many pool tables at Sugar which I guarantee will keep you occupied for hours. The pool tables cost $3 per game. On busy nights such as Saturday be prepared to pay a $10 deposit for the cues and the white ball. If you like expensive champagne then Sugar is the place to go with a champagne list written on the mirrors behind the bar and on the blackboards. Drink specials are a rarity and base spirits cost around $8. If you are a university student, I suggest you get yourself a ‘pocket pal’ from Student Flights so you can get $5 base spirits, beers and cider at Sugar. There is usually an entry fee for around $5.

Sugar attracts a diverse crowd and usually varies each night. It is open every night from 9am and the busiest nights are Friday and Saturday. Sugar typically stays busy until it is licensed to close at 4am. If you work in the hospitality industry then Sugar is a great place to go for after work drinks and a dance. The funky music is a mixture between the old classic favourites and todays. The dance floor is quite good and you often see people crank out moves that should have been abolished years ago! With all of these fantastic qualities, a night out in Sugar is a must.
