With this recent event, where a dude climbed up a scaffolding at Creamfields music festival in Sydney and then proceeded to fall 20m off of it, we thought it was the right time to whip out an article of the ins and outs of surviving a music festival, so you too can prevent falling off a steel structure and plummmiting head first towards the ground.
Not surprisingly, we suggest not climbing things. Sure you may become a YouTube sensation like the still unnamed party-goer who climbed and fell off the scaffolding tower, but you may also end up seriously injured, dead or worse, stuck up there while everyone back on planet Earth has the time of their lives.
If it’s a Summer festival, make sure you take your sunscreen. Your pockets and bags may be full of other necessities seemed more important like lipgloss, chewing gum and little bottles of alcohol you’re trying to sneak in, but you won’t regret it the next day when all your friends are sporting the latest shade of red - on their faces. Plus, these days you can buy itty bitty bottles of sunscreen so there’s really no excuse.
Drink beforehand. While we here at bars and nightclubs central always promote the responsible consumption of alcohol (ahh who are we kidding!), we still encourage you to drink and get a bit pissy before you get there. Why? Because these days festivals not only DO NOT sell full strength alcohol (that’s right - it’s mid-strength RTD’s and beer all the way!) but they charge you a gazillion dollars per drink. They try and trick us into thinking it’s so that we “drink responsibly” That’s funny cause they don’t let us buy 1 drink, we have to buy a drink card which gives us like 2 and a half drinks….We know it’s so they can make more money out of us, so why not beat them at their own game and get drunk before you enter the gates (not too drunk that they wont let you in though!)
Don’t sit on the port-a-loo toilet seats. If you’ve ever seen one, especially at a festival, you won’t even need an explanation for this one.
Always err on the side of caution at music festivals. That means, if it’s forecast to be cold - take a jumper. If you’re worried about losing something valuable - don’t take it. If a strangers offers you a drink or something else, you probably shouldn’t take it. Know the DJ’s you definitely want to see? Organise a schedule so you know where you’re going and at what time. Afraid of losing your friends? Don’t split up. Make sure you’re always with at least one member of your entourage at all times, phone signal can be a real bitch at festivals and most of the time people can’t hear their phones.
With all this useful info, you are now properly equipped to take on the music festival circuit!
