Pacha Sydney started up at Ivy last year and has been going strong ever since, offering Sydneysiders a clubbing experience like none other and bringing a little piece of Europe (where the club originated) to Sydney. Each Saturday Pacha buzzes with entertainment including choreographed dance acts, acrobatics, circus acts, fire breathing and even stilt-walking – all performed in stunning costumes by acclaimed costume designer James Browne.
May 25th marked the start of the winter season for Pacha and the introduction of their new rotating shows titled ‘Insex’, ‘Dragonfire’ and ‘Myths’. Kicking off the night’s entertainment – the Insex show – was a stilt-walker dressed as a glittering butterfly. From there the excitement in the crowd grew as the dancers made their way on stage, led by stunning Holly J’adoll. Ten burlesque dancers lined the podium above the dance floor too, dressed in cute Katy Perry-like costumes complete with brightly coloured wigs. However, their moves were nothing compared with what was happening on the main stage where a dance troupe wowed the crowd in their futuristic golden and glitter get-ups, and it all came to an extravagant finale with smoke and confetti falling from the ceiling. The regular shows keep the night interesting and get the crowd going, not that they need much encouragement…
You’ll find an eclectic crowd of people at Pacha each Saturday, all with one thing in common: they are dressed to impress and out to have a good time. The dance floor is full by midnight and it stays that way all night long. It’s also one of the few places left in Sydney where smokers are not exiled because of the open roof, which also gives a great view of the starry sky (provided it’s not raining, at which point you can’t be too precious about your hair).
Level 2 on the other hand is largely reserved VIP space with plush seats and private balconies. However, this is also where you’ll find the Den, which was playing some awesome old school RnB hits when I stopped by – a nice break from the more dance and electro vibe downstairs. It seems there’s something for everyone at this versatile venue spread over four levels.
The DJs are changed up every weekend too, with plenty of local and international talent hitting the decks. On the particular night I visited, Oliver Twizt and Uberjak’d were the bigger drawcards. Although possibly the biggest plus for me was the platter of free French fries that made its way around the bar and dance floor – perfect for those late night munchies that come with drinking! Overall, a pretty decent night out if you don’t mind the huge crowd.
