Bear Brass Review

Review By Cassie Mckay

Nothing beats sitting with girlfriends after a long day of shopping with a glass of champagne in one hand and the new dress you got on sale in the other. It sounds too good to be true, which is why I was shocked to have found this place.

Located on the waterfront views of the Southgate Art & Leisure Precinct in Southgate is where the Bear Brass can be found. This abstract styled restaurant & bar is no doubt a great place to relax after a long day of work or play.

Visually the exterior itself is hard to walk by, especially with the huge abstract statue staring at you. The spacious outside decking is covered in colourful giant umbrellas with plenty of wooden seats and tables available. Inside you will find a wall filled with posters, as well as a built in wine rack. The bar to the left of the building is where you will find a stocked shelf of liquor and fresh fruit. Hot pink seats fill the light timber flooring while green plants also add a touch of greenery to the interior. A very industrial retro themed decor is what best describes Bear Brass; inside and outside you will find structured & raw material based furniture along with a touch of nature.

At Bear Brass you will find a variety of ages from young children with their parents to university students and businessmen. Bear Brass features a menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner; so many ages can come to eat & drink. Price wise I found Bear Brass to be quite affordable, especially for a location like Southgate which isn’t always an affordable restaurant area.

The most you will pay on the menu is $15 unless you want to share a Bear Brass taste plate with friends, which range from $23 to $29. I found their menu to be quite delicious but by far breakfast is the best; you can’t go past the Bear Brass waffles! For those vegos out there (like myself) there is a range of eatable recipes on the menu, not an overly huge range unfortunately but none the less something to pick from. When it comes to alcohol Bear Brass have a huge range of wines, champagnes & beers on tap so you can’t go wrong. If a cocktail is what you’re after then they do not offer a huge range, but you can ask for one to be custom made. Prices of drinks range from $5 to $120 (if your looking to pop open some bubbly).

One thing that you will probably not find in the central city bars of Melbourne is the Bear Brass water taxi, which departs from the front of Bear Brass off the pier. Enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner whilst riding down the Yarra River till you reach Melbourne Park. So if waterfront views aren’t enough for you then why not drink & eat over the water!

Bear Brass is a great place for a catch up with girlfriends or dinner with the in laws. The ambience is laid back with a mixture of fun; so next shopping day you can me count in for lunch at Bear Brass, maybe even some drinks along the river too.
