As a Gold Coast local I must admit I am much more familiar with the Gold Coast’s clubbing scene than Brisbane’s, but nonetheless I feel as though I can give a decent and unbiased review of which area has the better nightlife. In saying this it all depends on what you’re after, be it convenience, a cheap night out, or musical preferences. There are a few factors that set apart one from the other so here is a pro cons list for you.
Gold Coast - Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach
What I love about Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach is that you get multiple clubs in the same street. Take Surfers for example. You can walk from one end of Orchid Ave to the other and hit 8 nightclubs that all have completely different vibes. Like Vanity vs. Elsewhere, it’s like black vs. white. Again in Broadbeach, there are 3 clubs and countless bars to keep you entertained. It is thought of as the “upperclass” clubbing scene on the Gold Coast, and much cleaner than Surfers, although not as cheap.
Some cons, in my opinion, include the size of the clubs and the quality. Compared to Brisbane, the Gold Coast looks like a small country town to be pitied for their lack of variety.
Brisbane
There is just so many different places to go in Brisbane, and that’s what always gets me. On the Coast it’s like Surfers or Broady, but in Brisbane there are endless possibilities. The city, the Valley, West End, Brisbane North, South, East, West, the list goes on. Brisbane is inundated with clubs and bars everywhere for people with all different kinds of taste. If you’re a student, there’s the Royal Exchange, which is always good for a cheap messy night out. But if you’re up for something a little more classier, there’s Cloudland.
In saying this, a disadvantage could be that there is too much happening. On the Gold Coast, you’re just a tram ride away from the different clubbing districts, but in Brisbane, if you’re in the Valley and you suddenly decide you need to be in the city, that’s a whole cab ride that needs to be paid for.
In the end, they’re both quite similar. The “hipster bar vibe” has developed in both areas, and you won’t be lost for a drink and a good time either way, but if you’re looking for the bigger and better toy, best choice goes to Brisbane.
