Back in the days when women were exiled to the kitchen (and the bedroom!), the only jobs on offer to the fairer kind were as secretaries or other ad hoc office jobs. Back when women couldn’t vote and men were the sole breadwinners of the family, they were expected to fork out their hard-earned cash to pay for drinks for the women of this world!
However, these days, the days of women’s lib, burning bra’s and female prime ministers, a question remains: do we still expect a guy to pay for drinks when out at a bar or nightclub?
Opinion on this issue is definitely divided: there are men who believe it is there duty as hunter gatherers to supply endless amounts of alcohol to females in need, while others wouldn’t pay for a drink for a girl even if they wanted to get into their pants! Likewise, women’s opinions are just as segregated on this topic: some women are offended if a guy offers them a drink and say they can afford their own drinks and they don’t need anyone to buy anything for them (feminists of the world unite!); while other’s make it their personal challenge to see how many free drinks they can obtain from unsuspecting, horny men out on the prowl. Hell, this is such a debated topic - there are entire forums dedicated to it!
Dating guru David DeAngelo, says you shouldn’t buy drinks for women if you want to get lucky. Mr D, suggests this will make you appear like every other guy and you should take actions to ensure you make a ‘unique’ impression. Singer Steve Holy had a different impression when he wrote the song Men Buy The Drinks (Girls Call the Shots). His lyrics went something like this: “Cause it’s a woman’s world/Might as well face it/Yeah they got what we want and we’re willing to chase it/It’s a woman’s world, boys like it or not/Men buy the drinks, girls call the shots”.
The website Askmen.com says that women are not expected to buy rounds - ever, and that men should pay for the first drink, but should not feel obliged or be expected to pay for all drinks, all night. Leader in online dating site, eHarmony, says back in the day men were expected to pay, but that the percentage of women who are now paying their own way has shot up dramatically in the last decade.
While this will always be a touchy, divided topic, I think it’s safe to say that if you’re on a date with a guy, he will more than likely buy you at least one drink, but the days of mystery men sending drinks to your table from across a crowded bar, are long over.
