Alberts Hotel Review

Review by Alice Worthy

This is your official invitation to the new and improved Alberts Tavern of North Sydney. If you’ve tried other nightclubs nearby and are looking for something different, Alberts should be your next stop. The club has been around for ages, but until recently, has been known for its ‘after work drinks’ label. Now it’s been reinvented, and made to suit the 18-21 year old crowd that parties in North Sydney.

What sets this stylish boutique club apart is the opportunity to escape the north Sydney crowds, with an inexpensive and fast bar service and it’s unique playlist. Alberts avoids the over played top 40 hits but I’m not sure the house and disco tracks the DJ’s play will be everyone’s cup of tea.

Alberts is split into two (quite classy) rooms. After free entry and a stamp that doubles as a pass out, guests enter to the main part of the club. It’s quite a small space compared to other venues but the majority of it is the dance floor, so for those who like to head bop to the techno beats, you have a lot of room! The décor is quite sophisticated with a recessed DJ booth walled with mirrors and red curtains. The feel of this room is quite relaxed, yet the purpose is clear: drinks and dancing.

For those of you who can sweet-talk the bouncers, it’s likely you can get yourself access to the second half of the club: the VIP room.

Now here is where the venue fell a little short for me. I can see the thought behind the VIP room: a place where you can socialize without crazy dancers knocking your drinks, a place with $20 cocktail jugs and $5 house beers, and a place to chill. However, for me, the VIP room lacked the exclusivity that its name implies. The room was over-lit which made me feel like I was in a café drinking a cocktail jug and there was no music, only the dulcet bass reverberating through the wall from the other room. The room itself had a great layout with couches and it’s own bar and great artwork, but it defiantly lacked mood and atmosphere.

This isn’t to say that Alberts isn’t a popular place. In fact, at 11pm on a Thursday night, it can be packed inside with people still lining up. This is probably because of the free entry as well as awesome drink prices.

The bar staff at Alberts are tops, and it seems like they are partying as well. Alberts offers delicious buckets from for $20 but with the size of these things, nobody is complaining. For the average drink, prices are very reasonable with vodkas for about $7, on par with most places.

Overall, Alberts is a great place to head if you’re club hopping around North Sydney. It could get a bit boring if you were to stay all night, but defiantly stop by, even just for a delicious cocktail jug!
