Belgian Beer Cafe Bluestone Review

Review by Andrew Bishara

I remember the first time I went to the Belgian Beer Cafe Bluestone. It was for a birthday one of my friend’s relative and frankly, I was not to keen or interested in visiting the Cafe. Well, how I ate my own words. The Belgian Beer Cafe is a classic venue, and I loved it so much, that I held my own birthday there, months later.

What’s so good about it? Simple: if there is one place we you can literally kick back, relax, and down a few classy European pints, this is the place. Just off St Kilda Road, next to Wesley College, the cafe is surrounded by beautiful trees and looks like you’re in a beer garden right in the heart of Belgian itself.

Set against the historic bluestone building, the Cafe covers a huge area. Inside the bluestone, you’ll find yourself back in time to a traditional Brussels beer hall. Sleek wooden floors, with booths situated around the bar, it’s a cosy place during the winter months and delight during the summer heat.

Outside, tables and chairs are spread amongst the cafe. With two outside bars, patrons don’t always have to walk inside the bluestone to grab a drink – thank god! The atmosphere outside is fantastic, especially in summer time, with a sun above you and a cool breeze it seriously is a great place to spend those lazy Sunday afternoons where there is live music every week, playing anything from Latino to Jazz hits.

You’ll find an older crowd at the beer cafe, and you won’t have the hassle of many 18 and 19-yeatr-olds causing havoc. On Friday nights the cafe is filled with businessmen and women, coming down for end of work drinks. Saturday nights, though, damn, it’s peaking: seats are hard to find, and it’s packed to the brim, but being a large area and with bars outside, getting a drink won’t be an issue.

But of course, the reason everyone is at the beer cafe is for, well, the beer! Now, you won’t find your regular Carlton Draught or Melbourne Bitter here. No chance of that. What makes this place so great is the choice and variety of the classy, traditional made European beer that you have at your disposal. Make no mistake, regardless of what is purchased; you’ll fall in love with the taste of it (I’m trying to go through all of them)

You can get classic Belgian draught beer, such as Stella Artois, Hoegaarden White, Leffe Blonde, Leffe Brune and Belle Vue (cherry flavoured) all for roughly $8.50-$9 a pint. If you’re looking to expand your horizons, Bluestone does offer other bottled wheat beers; amber, dark and blonde ales and ciders with prices ranging from $8.50 to $18 a pint.

As for the food offered, you can get anything from basic bar food (such as fries, steak, pies) costing anything from $8 to $20. However, if your keen for sitting inside and indulging in restaurant food, the options span from pasta, to duck and steak dishes, but they don’t come cheap with meals starting at $23.

There is no question: if you’re after a relaxing time, drinking some foreign beers with your lads or ladies, the Belgian Beer Cafe Bluestone is the place to be. You can have a meal, sit in the summer shade and have a fantastic time, anytime of the year. Take my word for it...the Bluestone is a classic.
