Ah, celebrities. No matter what they’re famous for, you can’t help but see their faces plastered everywhere from newspapers, the internet and trashy magazines like New Idea. It doesn’t even matter how famous a celebrity (if they can be called that) is, whether they’re on the Hollywood A-List, rock stars or a cast member of an Aussie soapie, they’ll appear somewhere.
Ray Meagher, who plays Alf Stewart on Channel 7′s long running “hit drama” Home And Away, is one such Aussie soap star and is going to be at Marquee in late June. Stone the flamin’ crows! I guess small towns like Summer Bay get boring even for its oldest residents. I’d understand why he’d appear somewhere like a shopping centre, but why the hell is he going to be at a nightclub? He’s well in his 60s, well past the age to have a mid-life crisis, let alone go clubbing. Imagine how many times he’s going to hear to the C bomb uttered by drunk dudes thanks to Doodleburger’s videos (see the video below if you’re one of the unfortunate people to have never heard of the comedic genius that is Doodleburger before, you’ll be better off for it! Speaking of which, Doodleburger should make a nightclub appearance!).
But I’ve noticed quite a few B and C grade celebrities suddenly making nightclub appearances during the past year. Fellow Home And Away actor Dan Ewing made an appearance at City Limits last year, getting plenty of gals lining up to get a pic with him that would later received Facebook comments like, “You lucky bitch!” or “OMFG!!! HE’S SOOOOO HAWT!!!”. Besides Alf, Geordie Shore stars Charlotte and James came all the way from England to appear at Marquee back in January. We all know celebrities get to hit up the town in ways ordinary folk can only imagine, but does this mean they’re party animals, or money hungry and will do anything for cash?
The answer is obviously money. I can’t even imagine how awesome it must be to be paid a handsome amount of moola just to show up to a nightclub. Granted, you’ve got to be on your A-game and be entertaining, but still. What a life! But you got to admit, this does take away from the coolness factor the celebrity had, being that this is just business for them. I’ve read autobiographies of rock stars who clearly lead amazing lives, but they talk about all the crazy partying and making pop culture history they do as if it’s just another day at the office. That’s pretty fucked up if you ask me, they’ve obviously forgotten how boring ordinary life is and have become ungrateful of what they’ve got.
I actually reckon it’ll be cool seeing Alf in the flesh; unlike most of the other celebrities making nightclub appearances, there’s just something about this old codger that makes him likeable. Why couldn’t Mr Stewart make an appearance at Marquee back when I was a regular!
