After recently having had to switch to a gluten free diet, I found that I was, quite literally, struggling to hold my drinks after lucky number three. Admittedly, my drinking ability prior to this wasn’t in much better form.
So, on account of my inability to have a glass of wine at dinner without getting trashed, I set out to find the best methods that would allow me to do so. Here are my findings:
1. Eating. A common misconception about eating is that it will ‘soak’ up your alcohol. While this is not true, eating a meal high in carbohydrates before you start drinking will reduces the amount of time it takes for the alcohol to travel into the small intestine, where a large surface area causes quick absorption.
So, quite simply, eat a meal high in carbohydrates or protein before you begin drinking could be the difference between enjoying your night and passing out cold before nine o’clock.
2. Mixing. I have seen far too many friends pulling the ‘man I shouldn’t have mixed my drinks’ card whilst clutching the toilet bowl of a seedy nightclub bathroom. When it comes to the projectile effects of alcohol, the only real thing to blame is quantity.
I found that no concoction of alcohol made any difference, it all got me drunk. So mix all you like, but remember that quantity is the key here. One thing that mixing is guaranteed to do, however, is give you one hell of a hangover.
3. Pace yourself. I must say it worked superbly whilst ever I actually did it. As my perception decreased, I seemed to speed up the clock a little. For some people, slow paced drinking is hard to maintain, although interchanging each drink from water to alcohol is almost as effective and will rid you of the dreaded hangover.
4. Keep Active. Walking, dancing or just generally moving. By keeping active, I found that I not only had a tendency to drink less, but I also had a much greater gage on how drunk I was.
It’s a lot easier to drink excessively while stationary, when you feel immune to the effects of the alcohol, as you aren’t utilising the co-ordination that the alcohol is inhibiting- until you stand up.
5. Diluting. This did not work. While it may seem like a good idea to dilute your drinks with soda water or other carbonated drinks, as it turns out, they will carry alcohol through the blood stream quicker. This explains why so many women get trashed on bubbly.
