Before we head out on the town for a night of drunkenness and debauchery, many of us are contemplating what to wear, “will we get lucky?” or “does my bum look big in this dress?” (ok, well that’s just us girls)…but we give little thought to the drinks we’re going to consume and what they do to our body - that is until we wake up the next day with a killer headache! With increases in diabetes, weight gain and an interest in health, I’ve decided to source out the healthiest alcoholic beverages to consume next time your out at a bar or nightclub.
Gin and Tonic
It might (in my opinion) taste like mentholated spirits, but sipping on a G&T is the best way to keep your waistline from expanding; that being it’s the alcoholic drink that contains the least calories. Couple that with tonic water which keeps you hydrated and lessens your chance of a hangover from hell (it also contains quinine which helps treat malaria, but unless your clubbing in the jungle, that’s not really beneficial!) And let’s not forget that slice of lemon/lime which is good for the liver (but make sure you get a couple of slices and squeeze the juice into your G&T- don’t just leave it floating around in there!)
Organic Wine
Whether you’ve hopped on the organic bandwagon or not, you can’t deny that organic is better for your body and the same principal works for organic alcohol. Unlike normal wines, most organic wines are made from grapes which aren’t heavily sprayed with chemicals and pesticides; and contain less or no sulphites (salts or acids used to preserve wine), therefore making them a lot healthier than normal wines. Have a glass of organic red (which is for the heart) and you’ll score double points!
Bloody Mary
Not only is it a hangover cure, but the mighty Bloody Mary contains tomato juice and celery which adds to your daily veg count! Enjoy it with a clean vodka and a natural tomato juice (one with not too much sugar in it) to keep your liver and head a bit happier!
Beer
According to the UK Daily Mail, beer is a “rich source of vitamins, fibre, minerals and antioxidants” which, compared with other alcoholic drinks, has a low calorie count. These vitamins and minerals help to keep you regular and can ward off diseases like osteoporosis. But take note, the study which found beer to be one of the healthiest alcoholic beverages, said this was only so when drunk in moderation.
