Australia’s beloved Falls Festival may be forced to discontinue its Tasmanian show after event organisers faced difficulty receiving government funding last month. Over the festival’s nine years, the government has contributed just $900,000 to the festival.
With organisers asking for $350,000 for next year alone, the government are less than impressed.
While a hike in the festival’s funding may seem grossly large by some, the festival, located at Marion Bay, 50km east of Hobart, has generated $150 million to the state’s economy since its humble beginnings in 2003.
16,000 festival goers are drawn to Tasmania for the annual festival (approximately half coming from interstate), with the government cashing in unprecedented amounts of revenue from the tourism industry due to the festival’s popularity each year.
“If we don’t get the funding, I think it would be very difficult to stage the Falls Festival in Tasmania in 2012,” event organiser Simon Daly said.
Given the amount we festival goers spend each year getting to the festival, isn’t it time that the government contributed a little something too?
The Falls Festival continues to run in Lorne in Victoria.
