Rue Bebelons is one of Melbournes original alleyway bars. Established over fifteen years ago, the venue was a refuge for weary night owls in search of a quiet drink with fellow frequenters in the small hours of the morning. Now the bohemian speakeasy is a place to ruminate with a salad roll and coffee (or a sneaky beer) at lunch, and by night it is a cozy spot for a casual drink and to peruse the multitudes of vintage vinyl LP's of Motown soul classics, latin street samba, and brooklyn funk.

Rue Bebelons Review

Review by Suzanne Williamson

This small and cosy laneway bar is the type of place you go because of the great location, but stay because of the funky atmosphere.

Just past the corner of Swanston Street on Little Lonsdale Street, Rue Bebelons claims to be one of the original alleyway bars.

Cafè by day and watering hole by night, it manages to effortlessly convert from caffeine dealer to bubbles seller with a good food available the whole way through. Pizzas feature on special some nights for as little as $8 and seasonal wraps and baguettes are made to order during the day.

Tiny candlelit tables are sprinkled around the tiny floorspace where you can enjoy a small selection of beer or cider. Pip Squeak is not cheap at $8.50 a bottle, although a happy hour between 6-7pm offered $5 schooners of beer. Cocktails were also scattered between $14-20 a pop with some very interesting names and ingredients shown, including mango liqueur, fresh coffee and maker’s mark bourbon.Big red lamps perpetuate the red glow thrown off by the bright walls and pressed flowers hanging from the roof create a homely, natural feeling perfect for casual drinks. Another big attraction is the record collection that plays overhead, with punters often coming to peruse the multitudes of vintage vinyl LP's of Motown soul classics, Latin street samba, and Brooklyn funk.

While Rue’s function room is available to theatre groups, photography exhibitions and private functions, the Melbourne Fringe is a big part of the entertainment atmosphere of the venue and comedy is a valued art-form within these walls.

Rue B Tuesdays is a new edition to their bill where you can see up to 10 up-and-coming young comedians perform over 2 or more hours for a measly $5. Easily the best value comedy show I’ve ever seen, I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to unwind after a day at work or uni OR looking to impress visitors to the Melbourne nightlife.

Frequented mainly by 20-somethings who love a chat and a casual bevvy, Rue Bebelons is a perfect mid-week fuelling point that is easy to get to - and easy to stay at.
