I often pondered this point. Are we, as women, attracted to success, or are men who are successful in life tend to be especially good at picking up women?
It’s the classic chicken or the egg situation. What comes first? Guys become good at picking up women and then with the inflated ego they take on the challenges of a work atmosphere, climb the ladder, stump all over the masses, or with the inflated ego they are given at work or from the advantages of an especially well-connected family, they approach the pick-up game with confidence? I’m not sure. What I’m sure is that success at work feeds success at play and vice versa.
So how does one start a virtuous cycle of success and avoid the vicious cycle of rejection?
To start, you must face your worst fears and take them head on. There’s no other way. As a budding pick up artist, you have to risk damages (to your ego) and remain focused to emerge unscathed and keep trying until opportunity presents itself. Easier said than done.
To understand what drives men to success and Pick Up Guru-dom, I picked up a few pieces of literature to find the answers. The Bible of all men striving for the coveted title of PUG (Pick Up Guru), Rules Of The Game by Neil Strauss proved to be a valuable guide.
It starts out easy. The key to advancing your game is to take on the challenge one day at a time. The first day, your mission is to approach 5 strangers and to make small talk. The missions get more and more complicated as you build your confidence with each exercise.
The challenge is beat when you, young grasshopper, have scored yourself a date with the girl of your dreams, or that obscure object of desire whose always eluded you, made you break out in sweats, but you wanted despite and because of all the nervousness you felt around her.
The other guide to success I can offer you is the real life story of the Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort.
Jordan has led a life larger than life, stranger than fiction and fit to be played onscreen by Leonardo DiCaprio. His movie will hit Australia in November. But why am I bringing him up? He’s the ultimate motivator, energizer and salesman, having made his millions by establishing a stock brokerage in New York City in the ’80s. His life is one that makes you wish you were alive in those days and working for him. I digress.
I say to read The Wolf Of Wall Street and watch his videos on the straight line sales technique because the game of picking up is the game of sales. In order to get past a girl’s judgment and filters, you need to know how to make a sale. Only once she’s sold on the idea of letting you closer, will you be able to close.
To master the game, don’t be shy and don’t be afraid to approach the masters. Now get out there and make small talk with 5 strangers!
