Sure, Carrie’s Mr Big sure could hold a martini and make it look masculine, but Hollywood is known for it’s acts of trickery. In the real world when muscular knuckles of the man to your right clench the sweet nothings of a strawberry daiquiri, all signs point to ‘prince’. Before you anticipate the arrival of Priscilla’s van (ready to whisk your diamante laden neighbour away) it might be time to consider whether the cocktail is an indicator of ‘sophistication’ or ‘the strange’ for men in nightclubs today.
Sophistication
Any man who is confident enough to order a cocktail instead of beer screams self confidence. He doesn’t care what those around him might think, hell, he’s just in it for the pineapple juice and full strength vodka (shaken, not stirred). More than mere confidence, the man with a cocktail shows a true sense of taste and culture- a zest for life and the triumph to give something different a go. Cocktails are also generally the most expensive liquor item on menu- meaning he’s not afraid to splash out dollar bills for good taste. If that isn’t sophistication, I’m not sure what is.
Strange
There’s no doubt about it- that guy walking around the bar holding a tall pink glass with an umbrella on top is nowhere near as appealing as any other guy holding a pint or schooner. Sure, if he’s enjoying a cocktail with his girl there’s no need to be alarmed. But when the lonesome guy in the corner orders a pink and purple fruit tingle whilst flying solo, eyebrows are sure to be raised, and girls can’t be blamed for wondering what else this flamboyant fellow likes to ‘tingle’.
