First it was the joint tour of New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) and The Backstreet Boys (BSB), then Aqua started touring, S Club 7 came down under (but denied a reunion) and now East 17 has confirmed they’ll be heading to our shores! For all of you who grew up in the 90′s, you would have fond (or foul) memories of these bands; what you can’y deny is that they all made an impression - positive or negative - that everyone remembers.
The boys from E17, as they were know to their fans, are the latest band in a long line, to announce a comeback tour. This provokes the question “is 2012 the year of the 90′s comeback?” Lets take a look at the evidence. shall we? Backstreet Boys toured down under in May sans NKOTB - they cited the ‘economic downturn’ as the reason they didn’t show up but we just think they didn’t have the energy to bounce around on stage (you boys aren’t spring chickens no more!). E17 have yet to announce their tour dates but lets bank on them pulling through (hopefully without any band fights or lead singer Brian Harvey running himself over again!)
Denmark’s most infamous export, Aqua performed at Melbourne’s Palace Theatre in March, to mixed reviews. One music enthusiast said perhaps they should’ve stayed in the 90′s! But lets not forget S Club 7, oops I mean 3, who recently performed on Sunrise. They seemed slightly out of league (and out of breath!) One commenter on a UK forum said it was embarrassing to watch (this from your own people!) They just lacked the X-Factor (yes, that was a stab at Danni Minogue who guest hosted the show but didn’t seem to notice they were lacking in a few things)
Who knows why they’ve all decided 2012 is the year they’re going to make their comebacks; what seems apparent though is that they all, well certainnly some, are just not up to scratch anymore - sometimes it’s just better to end on a high note - one that’s in tune. Perhaps we’ve all just moved on; with the likes of Gaga and (gulp) Beiber - these bands just don’t seem to cut it in the new millennium. Although having said that, if Hanson decides to jump on the 2012 bandwagon, we’ll happily be there singing along to the tune of Mmmmbop….
