Just like any great hobby or sport, the art of drinking deserves an array of terminology to accurately depict the wonderful world of bars and nightclubs. While the Oxford Dictionary served us well throughout our schooling and tertiary careers, the average A to Z just doesn’t cut it for after the hours of 9 to 5.
Luckily, the following terms are here to fill the gaps in your night-to-night speeches by the bar. Used correctly, we hope this jargon will find it’s way into the mouths of drunkards near and far.
’13 stepper’ n. A person attending Alcoholics Anonymous while still maintaining a drinking lifestyle; the thirteenth step is forgetting the previous twelve steps.
‘beerjangling’ v. A person who uses spare-change to purchase each and every beer.
‘alcoheimers’ n. The inability to remember what happened while drinking the night before.
‘drinking with Godot’ adj. Drinking while waiting for a friend who may or may not even turn up; from the Beckett play Waiting For Godot, in which the title character never appears.
‘whiskey under the bridge’ n. Drunken misbehavior which is forgotten with each and every further drink. e.g “It’s all whisky under the bridge!”
