I’m 25 this year. I don’t mind the occasional big night filled with booze and ending at six in the morning at a scummy local venue filled with pissed Bogans (I’m included in this one), but a few months ago I went out with a group of friends and noticed that we looked like the oldest ones there. And I started to think… How old is too old?
I noticed a few years ago when I started bringing jackets out with me that I was different to the other girls shivering in the cold as they were only wearing a strip of material as clothing. Or when my girlfriends and I were the only ones dancing and singing to Eminem’s old school songs as no-one else had heard of them. I was maturing - well kind of!
My 3 boozy nights out every week changed to 1 or 2 and the venues changed to bars instead of nightclubs. I changed my breakfast on a Friday at work from meat pies to actual breakfast foods and went to work feeling revived instead of hung-over with only a few hours sleep under my belt. I remember going out and thinking “Gosh the crowds are getting younger!”…but the truth was that we were getting older.
I remember thinking, “am I getting boring?” No! I can still drink my fair share of booze and will go all night until someone drags me home screaming telling me it’s time to sleep before I kill all my brain cells. Were us twenty something’s still accepted in Melbourne’s nightlife? Or should we be at home with our partners and 5 kids like what are parents were doing? I don’t think so. These days socialising is more important and we start doing grownup duties later in life. Times have changed and this is how I see it, 25 is the new 18.
I have now come to terms with my age. I am not going to stop going out just because I have changed my wardrobe or because I have been in the world a few years longer. We only live once so we should make the most of it. I don’t want to give up my cocktails, junk food and dancing shoes that are sticky from nightclub floors. I think that as long as we are not the old ladies at a club alone, dancing in a corner with false teeth flashing in the neon’s then we still have a lot more clubbing up our sleeves!
