The Queen Victoria Markets

Now this takes me back to my childhood days; growing up in a family hospitality business our Saturdays were spent at the Queen Victoria Markets, also known as Queen Vic or Vic Market.

My horrible early 8.30 am wake up calls on a Saturday morning were soon forgotten once it hit 3pm and we would take our rest stop at the Queen Victoria food court; fresh curries, pizzas and milkshakes!

Located at the in Melbourne’s CBD with parking and trams at walking distance, it is hard to walk past and not stop.

Of course the hassle of getting up early was enough to ruin any 11 year old’s weekend; the boring fruit and veg shopping, the horrifying loud section of fresh meat and seafood- where I would block my nose with my jumper to avoid the over powering fresh meat smell; the method used by every child at the markets.

After the long trip of food shopping my excitement start up when hearing  the words ‘how about lunch?’…excited not because I was hungry but more so I could finally breathe some meat free air…well raw meat free air.

After lunch we would make our way to the deli and then the fun area of clothing, toys and jewellery where my dad would ‘try’ to teach me the ways of haggling with clearly annoyed stall staff. The live beats of drums and soothing vocals of local performers would fill the air as I search through all the hand made bracelets for the one I would ‘maybe’ take home, depending on how determined my dad was and how stubborn the seller was.

I remember always going to see the old man who would play his saxophone, my dad always handing me a $1 coin to tip him with. If your looking for fresh fruit and veg then make your way to the corner store at the front, Benny- a family friend runs this stall with his father, mother and sisters…these days they branch out to other areas of the market becoming more and more popular for their great produce.

The market became a regular weekly ritual for my family; living behind our cafe business the market was our means for bread and butter…literally (horrible pun I know).

Open from Tuesday to Saturday usual finishing around 4pm, 5pm the latest.

Don’t forget the summer time with the night market offering music, bars, shopping and competitions! You cannot go wrong at Melbourne’s famous markets.

Do you need a hug?

This isn’t so much a Melbourne blog post but who can say no to a free hug…yeah didn’t think so

I am sure everyone has heard of Juan Mann also known as the ‘Free hugs guy’; an Australian born guy who was having a rough time in his life and one night went to a party to be spontaneously hugged by a stranger, which would send Juan to the streets of Sydney in starting a trend that would take the world by storm!

This Youtube video went viral and became the highest viewed video on Youtube!

So seeing as this inspirational video always makes me smile i thought it would be a great video to post, so enjoy!

Melbourne’s Fashion!

Melbourne’s fashion style is unique in itself; a vintage European mixture with a laid back style is only a simple description.

I myself have grown up in Melbourne’s CBD and i am still today exploring new boutiques and hidden clothing outlets. Melbourne does have this edge when it comes to culture; whether that is music, architecture, atmosphere, coffee or fashion.

A city where art talks, walks and sips…on lattés translates into the fashion you see on the street and shop windows.

In Melbourne fashion is all about the little details, stop one person on the street of Melbourne’s city and most likely one item on their body will have a story to it. Op shops are Melbournians best friends; i myself love the occasional Op days ( days where you dedicate a mission to visit every Op shop or vintage store within Melbourne’s city walking distance).

The one thing about Melbourne is that there is an endless amount of shops to find!

DFO outlets, Chapel street, city lane ways, Bourke street shopping district, bargain suburbs, markets and even train station shops!

You want it Melbourne has got it!

Host to Melbourne’s Fashion Week and Melbourne Cup (recognized internationally for it’s fashion), it’s no wonder the first thing people think when they visit Melbourne is ‘Neareast cafe and shops are where?’
