Amy Winehouse

Amy Jade Winehouse.  14 September 2020 - 23 July 2020

A tragic, but unsurprising and meaningless end for talented Soul songstress Amy Winehouse.

The troubled star has passed away at the tender age of 27 from a suspected drug overdose. Details are yet to be confirmed. By the time everyone reads this she will be buried at a private funeral.

Don’t get me wrong I really enjoyed Amy’s music, she was an unrivaled talent who helped boost Britian’s Soul music industry and paved the way for many other emerging artists. She made soul music cool again for the commercial audiences.

Music

Her lyrics in her music spoke clearly for her, when she was incoherent and high-as-a-kite. The beauty of the genre she sang under presented her very fragility and vunerabilty in a bright spot light songs like You know I’m no good, My tears dry on their own and Rehab are prime examples of intelligent poetry, but a loveless ending. Listening to her music, without the understanding her lyrics you almost want to cry, as she exposes her soul to the world. My favourite song still remain her cover of The Zuton’s Valerie.

Club 27

One thing is for sure, everyone seems set on making her an honorary member of the 27 Club. She, like other famous and unstable muso’s before her, died tragically at 27. She joins the seats next to Jimmy Hendrix and Kurt Cobain. Eternally idolised for who she was and what she could have been. For me I don’t believe in the 27 Club- this is isolated incident and shouldn’t be connected to anyone else’s demise.

Saying Goodbye

Amy was one of the most recognised people in the world. She was as famous for her music as she was for her outrageous behaviour, hairstyle and drug relapses. But  for all the eyes watching her, there was sorrow. Her fans, like her family new it was only a matter of time before Amy’s ride on the rainbow was going to crash and burn.

Sex, drugs and rock n roll is very much alive in the music industry- yet everyone refuses to acknowledge this is negatively impacting our society. And unfortunately Amy Winehouse wasn’t exempt from this negative cycle. What I will remember is her contribution to the Soul community, it is undeniable she will be missed. I just hope where ever she is, she has finally found her peace.

Valerie
