There are a lot of double standards when it comes to clubbing etiquette. Unlike the real world, (because maybe I’m a little bias) a lot of these apply to men. “Guys can’t wear shorts, or singlets or caps”, “Only guys over 21 allowed”, or the unspoken rule that “guys must be accompanied by girls”.
These rules are in place to weed out all the meat heads that usually end up ruining a perfectly good night out.
I don’t think it’s about, if it’s “okay” for guys to dance with each other, I think it’s how they go about it. I turned to some male friends for insight, and the general consensus is that most guys feel awkward when they dance. Guys seem to have a larger radius of personal space than girls do – which makes it hard to find your place on the dance floor. It’s this idea that makes it weird for dudes to dance with other dudes, but honestly, no one really thinks about it in those terms.
I get it, when you don’t know what to do with yourself in a club, it can feel awkward. I think it’s because guys don’t have a go-to dance move like girls do, i.e. swaying of hips and tossing the hair. Easy moves to master, if you have those things to work with. A group of bros on the d-floor looking awkward, makes it feel awkward and draws unwanted attention.
Actually, dancing with your mates on a lad’s night out might actually work in your favour. Without the presence of other females in your group, there is no pressure of competition from other ladies in the club. The girls may feel confident enough to come to you. The tables have been turned. Just be cool about it.
Don’t actively look like you’re on the prowl – try and be nonchalant. Just have fun with your mates, girls like guys who can let loose and have fun with their friends. Seriously, confident dancers are attractive. If you have no idea what you are doing, fake it till you make it.
On a serious note, two bros dancing together should not be seen as weird, creepy or – do I say it? GAY. There is nothing gay about this (its 2015, guys, seriously) – but if it is, you go son! Go ahead and find a good looking man to dance with, and dance the hell out of it.
In the end, as long as you’re not being an idiot on the d-floor, and not ruining anyone’s night, no one is worrying about who or what you are dancing with. Just let go of your inhibitions, if you don’t care what you look like when you dance, no one else will care either.
