Uni Pub: Canberra Comes Alive

By Kelly Teng

There’s a common idea that Canberra is filled with politicians, post-grad students and others who work for the government. In such an environment, it can be difficult to imagine bars and nightclubs that aren’t made to cater towards an older taste…and with the prices to match. When I went to Uni Pub in Canberra, I was pleasantly surprised: the drinks were reasonable, the crowd was young, and the atmosphere was genuinely enjoyable.

Topping Sydney University’s Manning Bar can be a difficult task, but I must say Uni Pub did a fine job of equalling it. It has 4 levels to cater to 4 different purposes (such as the Pool Bar, Elevated, and The Lounge), but these levels aren’t always open. Instead – depending on the night – there may only be two open, or on a Saturday they’ll all be available to the crowds of Canberrans that want to drink and dance. I only explored the bottom level, but I enjoyed it thoroughly: the decor made me feel as though I was in a classy restaurant, even though I bought the cheapest drink there. The bar was wooden, giving it a great classic feel, and the seats (in particular, the lounge) were extremely comfortable. The place was clean – even the bathrooms – and well laid out.

The bar staff were extremely friendly, which is one thing that I must say made me love coming here. The girl who served us helped point out the cheapest drinks, and also talked to us for a while, and our empty glasses were taken away very quickly. Also, it was refreshing not to see Toohey’s on every tap, and I was also surprised to see that instead of Smirnoff, Uni Pub served ‘Russian Standard Vodka’. If nothing else, this is a great place to try some drinks that don’t come around that often in uni bars like Manning or The Roundhouse.

To be honest, I didn’t pay much attention to the music that was playing there, which obviously means that I didn’t want to get up and dance. However, I think that the dancing side of Uni Pub is reserved for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights on the top floor Elevated, where the DJ will spin tracks all night long and students can go crazy after a hard week at uni. Instead, I settled for the relaxed ambience that flowed through the Ground Level: the one great thing is that on this level, you can have a conversation without losing your voice the next day. What’s also great is this: the people that go to Uni Pub are pretty diverse, making it easy to mingle around with new people. Everyone in Canberra is friendly, which just makes it even easier.
