What To Expect @ The Institution Gastro Ale House

“A pub that specialises in serving high-quality food” sums up The Institution quite nicely, I think. Coining the term “Gastro” of Gastro Pub, the Gold Coast’s newest restaurant gives foodies a unique dining experience. Walking into The Institution, I was surprised by how casual the atmosphere felt, with the warm wood décor and decorative chain curtains separating booths, giving the restaurant a low key trendy twist. The dim lit restaurant gives off the perfect vibe, with many booths for up to 10 people to get cozy together in at any one time.

The food is out of this world, taking an alternative spin on traditional pub foods. For example, why not pop in and grab a 300g scotch fillet steak with potato fondant, king brown mushroom, celeriac puree, truss tomato, and red wine jus. Admittedly I have no idea what celeriac is… Or red wine jus… But I can tell you that your taste buds won’t be left disappointed. The mussels also score a 10/10, well done.

Their reasonably priced cocktails ($14-$20) will set you up for the night – I recommend the “summer breeze”, it’s just as delightful as it sounds. If none of those tickle your fancy be sure to ask the bartenders what’s good, whether it be wine or ale they’ll set you straight.

Admittedly, I felt as though my friend and I at the ripe age of 20 were the youngest people there. With the DJ blasting house music all night, I did see a few “dad” moves on the dance floor. The Institution is definitely sophisticated and stylish, but not in a pretentious way. I could personally not see myself getting blind drunk there, but could certainly see myself there again sipping a “summer breeze” while picking away at creamy garlic marinated mussels on a fine evening. Or maybe popping in for a drink during a bar hop. But again, each to their own.

Conveniently located opposite the Cavill tram station in Surfers Paradise, you can pop in for drinks and dins and then zip home on the tram. Night set.
