4 Pines Review

Review by Brett Turner

It’s no secret that we Aussies love our beer. According to Wikipedia, a highly reliable and credible source, Australia ranked 4th in 2004 for highest beer consumption per capita.

But the days of the Foster slugging yobo, a stereo-type our politicians in the 80’s helped ring true, are almost all but behind us. We Aussies still love our beer however our palates have, somewhere along the line, become much more sophisticated and demanding. As such there is no wonder that A-grade microbreweries are springing up all over the place to supply this highly desired demand.

One such microbrewery which is really making its mark in the world of malt and hops is 4 Pines Brewery, Manly. Situated just across the road from Manly Wharf with radiant views from its wide sweeping balcony of Manly Harbor, 4 Pines Brewery is a local favorite. All beer served at the bar is brewed on site right in front of you. Through plate glass windows you can see the magic happen as water, hops, malt, barley and a touch of love are transformed in large steel vats into delicious brews of numerous, rich flavors. If you look hard enough you may even catch a glimpse of one of the brewers, toiling away like Willy Wonkers’s Oompa Loompas, just for your palatable pleasure.

Among the greats of 4 Pines brews includes the now seemingly infamous 4 Pines Pale Ale. This malty, hoppy ale really sets itself apart from a lot of the other pale ales on the market and in this humble reviewer’s opinion is a close rival to Western Australia’s famous, Little Creature’s Pale Ale.

4 Pines Brewery boasts a vibrant social atmosphere and is renowned for it mid-week live music nights and ‘Sunday Sessions’. The crowd through the week generally consists of your typical 9 – 5, city office worker, wetting their whistle after hard day as a suite after having conveniently just stepped off of the ferry before heading home to their humble abode. The weekends however take on a different vibe all together however maintain that relaxed and care free atmosphere. The patronage of 4 Pines on the weekends transforms into a mixed bag of socialites and first daters and those who simply know a good beer when they taste one.

Not only are the guys at 4 Pines producing a world class beer but they are also matching quite nicely with a lively, friendly place to sample it.
