The Green Room Lounge is a sophisticated, laidback alternative to the pub scene in Enmore. Within proximity of the Enmore Theatre and the creative types that flock to the Inner West, a bar that touches on performance and entertainment seems only fitting. The bar is decorated in distinct mid-century flavour, paying homage to the silver screen greats with a stream of film classics on a projector wall, and a general tip of the hat throughout to all things evocative of the theme and era. The drinks list is mostly local with boutique wines, beers and ciders but our passion is cocktails. Covering everything from the classics to a tailor made list exclusive to us, the mixes are fresh, innovative a really good reason to come down and check out The Green Room Lounge.

Review of The Green Room Lounge

Review by Stephanie Liebeck

For small bar lovers, the Enmore end of Newtown is becoming more and more alluring. What can look slightly derelict during the day turns into a bustling metropolitan of alcohol-infused fun once the sun sets. Claiming to be "Enmore’s first small bar", The Green Room Lounge offers everything you could want from a small bar - great drinks, great décor and great, easy-going service. Modest from the outside, once you walk through the front doors, you are transported to another time - classic 1950s without the Marilyn Monroe hair and male chauvinist morals.

Here, happy hour is every weeknight between 6-8pm, which includes $5 house wines and $10 house cocktails as well as the entertainment of either live music or a DJ almost every night. There is a great wine and beer list and a cocktail list for everyone. Food is available in the form of bar snacks, like a range of cheese platters, antipasto plates and olives, which produces a lot of “umm-ing” and “ahh-ing” over the menu.

Straight away the group that I am with are all over the cheap house wines and house cocktails as a student budget doesn’t afford us any class. After a few White Rabbits and a truly great Pinot Noir we all turn to the cocktail list.

When ordering a cocktail, the first thing that really strikes a spark is the names - the Polanski, the Kerouac and Grace Kelly are just some of the choices. Immediately struck by the romantic literary notions of drinking a ‘Kerouac’, the bartender tosses some tricks and pulles out a lighter to burn the lemon juice - quality entertainment when waiting for your drink to be served. After ordering a Kerouac ($17), a Kiss Me Kate ($16) and a Honey Rider ($17) we took our seat in a vintage green velvet lounge. With sixties hits blaring and playing the classic Humphrey Bogart movie Casablanca on a projector across the small area used as a dance floor, the atmosphere created here was pure ecstatic nostalgia.

A night out in Newtown rarely affords the luxury of nostalgia and suave sophistication however, after sipping cocktails and reclining in '50s style you cannot help but feel slightly more cultured and intellectual - it’s just the environment! With dim lights and great music this is a place where you can go by yourself to enjoy a fine wine or have a great night out with a group of people who appreciate great atmosphere and good drinks.
