The Russell Wine Bar Review

Review by Aravind Kesavan

Ensconced in the Chinatown neighbourhood, the Russell Wine Bar is one of Sydney’s best kept secrets. The bar on George Street is one of the best I have come across in Sydney by way of ambience. Particularly impressive is a stuffed peacock placed on top that really captures the mood of colonial English heritage.

It operates from a Victorian-era renovated building. However, when I looked up further on the arches, the stone was engraved as ‘Estd in 1887’. While savouring a Chardonnay for $10, I conversed with the general manager, Kris Cripps, who said that the bar opened in November 2010.

He explained various aspects: “The main target is business people. Those who are in their mid-20s and 40s. We have a great rating on ‘Trip Advisor’ and have people coming from all over the world. We have over 30 different varieties of wine from 68 brands. We focus on Australian owned, Australian made. The wines are sourced from smaller producers, creating a diverse mix of familiar and novel tastes.” Most of the wines were from South Australia, although there were different varieties from other states as well.

“Usually we are busy on Saturday and Friday nights,” he mentioned. However, the week has its fair share of customers. With a seating capacity of 64, the bar overall can accommodate 80 people at once.

Food costs anywhere from $6 to $19 each serve. The cuisine is exhilarating. Marinated Olives with orange, rosemary and thyme costs $6 to nibble. Some of the foods are: Beetroot Carpaccio (with herbed goat curd, figs and rocket pesto); Wagyu Bresaola (with goats cheese, drunken figs and micro herbs) and North African Spiced Chicken (with orange and green olive salad). As a traveller for me, the food is as memorable as the wine and quiet atmosphere.

Travellers on a tight budget, be warned - its good to spend on luxury once a while!
