Ryan's Bar Review

Review by Nancy Merlo

If you’re looking for a laidback watering hole to enjoy a couple of drinks after a hard day’s slog, make a beeline for Ryan’s Bar located in the heart of Sydney’s CBD. This open-aired beer garden and bar is perfect for after-work drinks in the summer when workers from all over the city pour in to hangout and take advantage of the extra hours of daylight.

You can’t see the bar from George Street as it’s nestled in amongst all the city high-rises, but you can’t mistake the buzzing sound of people chattering as you get a little closer. Things kick into gear fairly early at Ryan’s Bar; by 6pm most tables are full on a Friday night and by the time midnight hits the evening has peaked and whoever is left is usually far too intoxicated to have an intelligent conversation (although it’s quite entertaining to watch them try).

Ryan’s Bar is the kind of unpretentious place people of all ages would feel comfortable in, there’s popular and old-school R&B; music playing in the background, sports on the TV and the dress code is totally relaxed though there are quite a few people in work attire. Another plus is the food. It’s not exactly gourmet but it’s good, hearty pub-style food done well. There are a variety of pizzas, as well as burgers, salads, fish and schnitzel – the kinds of things that go well with a cold beer.

Speaking of beer, they’ve got plenty on tap (about 25 at the indoor bar). Wines are also reasonably priced, though they do have the more expensive varieties of champagne by the bottle only and there’s a decent list of cocktails, most of which are around $16. The flavoured Caprioskas are nice on a hot day, as is the carafe of Pimms & Lemonade, which can be shared between a couple of people.

Grab a stool around the fountain in the centre of the courtyard, where you’re likely to meet some people sharing the end of your bench, or a table under an umbrella further out if you prefer a slightly quieter environment. The indoor area was recently upgraded with a comfy lounge area and high wooden tables, which are great in winter but the huge outdoor space continues to be the big drawcard at this unique bar. Either way, an evening at Ryan’s Bar is a relaxing way to spend an evening catching up with friends.
