What to Expect @ Charlie Chan's

I've been to Charlie Chans a handful of times. And I have to say it's not exactly spectacular, but it has its own charm. The bar is on George St at the Chinatown end, so it's perfectly positioned in the city. The venue is small, and it features a simple but contemporary design.

The main area near the bar has communal tables with high stools. There's also a small lounge area towards the back, with low cushioned seats. Then at the very back, the venue leads out to the courtyard, which has a bistro. The menu features various Thai dishes - come here for the lunch special!

It has a mostly Asian clientele (understandable, seeing as it's located in Chinatown), but also a few foreigners (it's close to the backpackers area) and after-work customers.

The best thing about Charlie Chans' design is that it looks out onto George St. There's a small window area at the front where maybe only three people fit. But it's a very cute idea. The only downside is that random people actually come up and talk to you, which is rather strange. Nonetheless, it's the perfect spot to people-watch and enjoy the evening air.

What's more, there are half price signature cocktails on Thursdays and Fridays from 5-9pm. This is so, so worth it. I recommend this bar entirely for the half-price cocktails!

And for those who are housebound or looking to take their nighttime fun to another level, there's a Charlie Chans bottle shop right next door for your convenience.

fI can't say that I'm overly impressed with Charlie Chans. But it's still a pleasant, convenient and well-situated bar. And its promotions like half price cocktails and lunch specials makes it value for money!
