The Docks Hotel Review

Review By Benny Lee

Docks hotel is like the popular kid in school that you used to envy who captained every team, played in a band, excelled academically and still had a great social life. Just like the cool kid from school, Docks has always got something going on. Throw in the fantastic waterside views of Darling Harbour and you have a winning combination.

With happy hour from 6-7pm Monday through Friday, Docks generally pulls an older crowd to come in and unwind by the water after work. In all likelihood you’re going to be there for longer than an hour and will get hungry. Thankfully, they have an extensive menu of modern Australian cuisine but if you’re looking for a light snack the beer-battered fries come highly recommended. If you happen to visit on a Monday, Docks does two for one pizza after 6pm and on Wednesday a schooner and schnitzel is only $15.

The venue isn’t as big as other places along the harbour but it still boasts two bars, with lounge areas and pool tables inside (pool games are free after 6pm on Tuesdays) but it makes up for it with substantial seating outdoors on the smoking deck. The dance floor is cosy so if you don’t like being grinded up on this probably isn’t for you. The DJ clocks on at 6pm Friday nights – just in time for happy hour. The music gets progressively louder as the night goes on with the DJ playing a mix of new and old party tracks, so if you’re searching for a place to shuffle you’ll need to keep looking. Friday nights offer another incentive for the patrons who’ve come for happy hour to stick around in the form of half price cocktails from 8-10pm. Thanks to the alcohol the atmosphere is usually buzzing until the early hours of the morning.

If you’re making your way down to Docks on a Saturday for Cameo, their weekly event, be sure to get there before 10 if you want to get in for free. If you rock up later there’s a $15 cover charge and while $15 may be cheaper than alot of other bars and clubs around town I’d rather spend it on drinks. Bear in mind, while it may be fashionable to be late the early bird does get the worm – happy hour is from 9 – 10 on a Saturday.

Personally, while I’m a fan of Docks it isn’t somewhere I frequent with a larger group of friends due to the smaller dance floor. However, it would be great for a date as the harbour looks spectacular at night and the overall experience would be rather intimate. Docks is definitely worth checking out, even if just for a lunch date and a cold one.
