Blackbird Cafe Review

Review by Ashleigh Baker

Blackbird Cafe is set in the beautiful Cockle Bay Wharf of Sydney and you get fantastic water views from their balcony level location.

The decor itself is quite nice too, with garden decorations including a gazebo inside, some swing chairs out on the balcony near the main entrance, lots of yellow and black, and ample seating area inside. However, having said that, if you have a big group it may be wise to make a booking or turn up earlier in the night to ensure you get a table.

It is a fairly relaxed atmosphere and a really great place for some good food and drinks that are reasonably priced. One of my favourite things about this place is that there always seem to be deals going on! I can't go past the $10 cocktails and champagne cocktails but the $16 ones are just as delicious.

They also have some good share platters and lunch and dinner deals happening so if you end up getting peckish or want to nibble on something then there are plenty of options that won’t break your bank for the rest of the night or weekend. Overall, the beverage and food choice is great and there will be something for most people.

The venue does tend to be a bit busier at nights, especially as a pre-venue for a night out, but you will find it filled during the weekend days of summer too. Apart from a good night out, I’d also recommend it on a summer Sunday for a recovery lunch or catch up over drinks followed by a walk around Cockle Bay Wharf on a sunny afternoon.

It isn’t as fast-paced as many other Sydney restaurants and bars so you may find yourself waiting for service depending on how busy it is and how many people are in your group so just keep this in mind if you are heading out after.

Although it is a fairly relaxed place to be, it is in the heart of Sydney and people tend to dress up in smart attire, particularly on weekends, so in order to feel comfortable you may want to note this.

The crowd tends to be on the younger side, with an average of 20-35 year old patrons, however there tends to be a lot of groups of people – groups of friends, hens nights, work mates and birthdays pick this as a venue of choice. So whilst it is a good place to catch up and chat, if you're aiming to meet new people (or pick up) there isn't really the opportunity to do so at the Blackbird.
