Mustang Bar Review

Review by Shannon Wood

The Mustang Bar in Northbridge is a well-established, American themed sports bar. It is one of those places that attracts a steady crowd mid-week, and come Friday and Saturday nights, is more of a nightclub than a bar.

Located in Northbridge, the nightclub district of Perth, the Mustang has fierce competition from all the modern, funky bars in the area, but somehow has managed to stand the test of time as an ever popular destination.

The last time I visited the Mustang was a Saturday night, the line was small and fast moving which is always a bonus. Unlike many other clubs in the area, there is no entrance fee - another positive, especially those on a student budget.

The Mustang Bar is like a faithful old friend: always there for you when others fail. You know you’re going to have a good time there regardless of the other more hip and stylish clubs and bars out there. Even if it’s not the only destination for the night, it’s a great way to start the night or go for a sit down drink.

There is always a good vibe at the Mustang: a mix of old and young, and people having a dance. It’s not the type of place people go to be seen or put on a fashion parade, just to let loose at the end of a hard week and have a few drinks.

The décor is very American here, there are posters and signs hung up all around the walls, and the wooden floors and walls give the large bar a slightly cosy feeling. The dance floor is large, and the long bar, gives the place an open and airy feeling.

Drinks are reasonably priced here: $8 for vodka lemonade, $9 for a Whisky and Coke, and $12 for a large vodka red bull. Mid-week drink specials are also available.

As the live band starts up, the dance floor fills. Playing a mix of old and new hits to please the crowd. Live bands are always a winner in my eyes, they get the audience involved. In the back of the bar there are a few large screen televisions playing mostly English football, no surprises there are groups of rowdy guys crowding around. I think this adds an extra element to this place, there’s something for everyone.

There are large booths around the edge of the room, allowing groups to be able to sit and have a drink together, and to ease their feet from all the dancing.

The Mustang has many mid-week, and weekend events such as live bands, swing dancing nights, live sports nights and various other events, which can be found on their website. The Mustang is a great place to go for a well-priced drink, to watch a sports game, or to dance to a quality live band. Great crowd and venue can guarantee a good night!
