What to Expect @ Rise Nightclub

Throwing open the doors one year before Y2K, the name Rise quickly became synonymous with the turn-of-the-millennium rave scene. Flash forward eleven years, and whilst many clubs have since hit the dust or rebranded to snare a different (more lucrative) image, the James Street mainstay is still kicking on like its 1999. Rise has not only risen beyond public expectations, this is one establishment that's stayed stoically true to its roots.

The new places of worship, according to Swedish chanteuse Robyn, are nightclubs. You definitely won't hear any of her tracks being pumped out of the speaker stacks, but I do think the disco pixie is onto something. Clubs are where people can go to experience something bigger than themselves. Deeply steeped in Perthite rave lore, Rise has a tendency to polarize local opinion more than Pauline Hanson at a immigration convention. Nevertheless it's a base for clubbers of all stripes, from Kandi clad ravers to weekend warriors and the overworked/unpaid, determined to make the most of their 48 hours off from the world.

Friday and Saturdays see a regular line up of local and international acts, churning out the latest drum and bass, dubstep and trance beats, alongside the requisite old school anthems. For non members the door fee is $10. After 1 this ups to $15 so if you're betting on a late one, be sure to get your stamp early. Purpose built for getting your moves on, this is a one room dance space decked out with podiums, a DJ booth and a lighting rig to end all lighting rigs. The split level floor starts heating up after 11, hitting fever pitch around 2. Believe it - patrons come to here to d-a-n-c-e. Rise's longevity is living proof that you don't need a fussy drinks list, insipid Top 40 tunes or a velvet rope to draw a crowd.

Truth is, 'go hard or go home' pretty well sums up the prevailing Rise mantra. Nightly the venue transforms into an all out, guns-blazing, glowstick whirling spectacle of energy and movement. If you find the pace a bit much, opt to grab a drink from the mezzanine bar or chill out on the balcony. Situated in the nerve centre of Northbridge, the view to the street down below always offers an interesting counterpoint to the insanity raging inside.

No lock out time means nocturnal dwellers can start the night late and party until the early hours. Just remember to have a pair of sunnies on hand for when you finally emerge into daylight.

Are You Ready to Rise?

If you're after a rave, Rise nightclub is where you should be heading. Located in Perth's hot party district Northbridge, the club is an upstairs venue situated on the busy James Street.

The club is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm with an entry fee of $10 and after 1am you pay $15. The line gets busy by 10.30, with the club starting to fill up at 11; you are going to want to get in line early to avoid the long wait in line.

This really isn't the place to go unless you are into heavy dancing and hardcore trance, as this is a club for raving. With the clubs crazy strobe lights and the dance floor being the main feature in the middle of the club, it is full on. There are platforms and mini stages set up around the area for those who want to shine and let loose. When you want to get away from all the chaos on the dance floor, there is a balcony where you can catch some air, chill out and have a smoke.

The type of people that go to Rise are shufflers who are ready to battle and show off some moves, so be ready to be squashed and trampled on. There isn't a strict dress code so don't bother wearing your coolest kicks, fancy heels or good party gear because it's going to get wrecked and everyone in the club is too off their face to notice how you look.

The goers of Rise are a younger crowd being aged 18 to 25, not having too many older people apart of the party. Only head to Rise if you're ready to rave or looking to get intoxicated, because this club is one of those places were you have to be in the mood to enjoy the clubbing experience.
